Will the Hunter let him live another night? Or is this vampire destined to fry into a pile of soot?
Emily Cross is a born Hunter. Her life’s work is to keep the balance between the Supers and the Supers who have stepped out of line. She’s never been keen on the Rogues taking over the Hunters. She doesn’t want to kill all the Supers…she is one! When she finds a nearly charred vampire in the woods during one of the hunts, her thoughts turn from killing to keeping him alive.

He was dead. Had to be. Hagan stared into the darkness surrounding him. He’d been out in the sunshine for too long—nasty business for a vampire. Sunlight ensured death. He shouldn’t have been in the daylight at all. He should’ve stayed in the cave…but he had to keep Ava alive. If she didn’t make it, then no one would know the true extent of what Maslow had done. Someone had to change the tide of the war.

He wondered if she’d made it out. He hadn’t seen her when he went back to the cave. He’d damn near burned to a crisp in the sun. His hands and arms were practically black and peeling. So much for trying to help. But when had he crawled back into the cave? The last he knew, he was still outside in the sunshine.

Hagan groaned. So this is what death felt like…a charred steak left in blackness. It wasn’t as if he was going to head to heaven. Nope. Vampires weren’t on par with angels. He’d be lucky if he received passage to hell. At least there, he’d see his other vampire friends. He hadn’t done a thing to earn him an audience with the Sources.

“Do you know where you are?” a thin male voice asked.

He froze, although he wasn’t sure if movement was possible in the vast vacuum of darkness.

“I’m lost and confused,” he confessed. “Where am I?”

“You’ve been found. Sit,” the male said.

Hagan still wasn’t sure who was talking or where to sit. He glanced around at nothingness. As he looked, the darkness faded and he noticed an outcropping of rocks. The stones arranged almost like a chair. Huh. He’d seen rocks like that before, but only one place and it was while he’d passed through… He’d heard about stones and darkness where the Sources held court, but surely, they weren’t talking to him. Was he in the presence of the oldest beings in the world? The Sources?

“Yes, Vampire. You are where you believe yourself to be.” A light appeared, illuminating a figure clad in a crimson robe. Dust swirled in the light, obscuring the individual’s face.

“Sir.” Hagan dropped to his knees and bowed his head. He was really in the cave of the Sources. No freaking way. The Sources only called the most important Supers into their presence. He wasn’t important.
“Speak the words on your mind,” the male Source said.

“I don’t know why I’m here.” Hagan didn’t look up. “I should be dead. I was in the sunshine. Did I save Ava? Is she my mate? What’s going on with the war?” Good Goddess, he had a lot of word vomit in his head.

“Ah. The vampire of many questions.”

“Will you tell me?” He had no right to be so demanding, but they had told him to speak.

“You’ve been summoned.”

“And saved? Or am I dying?”

“Your journey is not at the end.”

The Source talked in so many stupid riddles. Hagan bit back a growl. “Then what am I to do?”

“Continue on.”

“How?” he blurted. He didn’t even know where he was going or how he was supposed to get there.

“Trust your heart and your calling. The war is still not won and can be lost on good intentions.”

His calling? Lost on good intentions? Why in the name of the Goddess did they have to be so cryptic? “I’m confused.” He couldn’t see much more than the Source’s robe. They could reveal themselves to him. It wasn’t as if he’d live to tell anyone about what he’d seen. He hated not knowing what was going on or seeing the face of the person talking to him.

“As expected, you are confused. Your journey is long and hard. You will return to the Earth. Find your mate and continue on your way. Trust.” The being snapped his fingers. “Go.”

The Source would have to sound like a mystical sci-fi character from the movies—all enigmatic and bizarre.

The door creaked. When Ava shifted her focus from the clothes, Joachim smiled. She liked the wolf shifter from the first moment she’d met him. Quiet and shy, he didn’t command attention like some men, but he grabbed hers.
“Hey, you.” He sat on her bed. “What’s happening? Clothes shopping?”
“Something like that.” She browsed the different dresses and then picked a red and white check pattern. “Close your eyes.”
“Ava. I won’t do anything.” He shrugged. “I’ve been a gentleman so far.”
She had to give him that—he hadn’t pushed her. Ava hesitated. This was a big moment for her. She didn’t undress in front of anyone unless he’d been willing to pay or was Maslow with a gun to her head. She didn’t want Joachim to see the scars.
“Please?”
The shifter grinned and did as she’d asked. He folded his legs up under his powerful body. The muscles in his arms bulged. Her belly tightened and her nipples ached. She liked strong men and wondered what it would be like to wrap herself in his embrace. Of course he’d have to be attracted to her. She doubted he liked girls. He hardly gawked at her in the same ways other men did. She wriggled out of the T-shirt and shoved her tattered jeans to the floor. A part of her wanted to run across the room and jump into his arms. She wanted to be desired. The rest of her knew the score—get dressed and forget the attraction she craved. She unzipped the garment and slipped the soft cotton over her frame. She wasn’t as busty as the original wearer, but she liked the way the dress snugged her ribs and waist and showcased some of her cleavage.
“Okay, you can look.” She strolled up to him. “I need you to zip me.” She turned her back on him. “Please?”
“This fits you well.” He tugged the pull, closing the back of the dress. “I like it.”
“Do you?” She let go of her hair and faced him. “This is part of me being brave.”
“How?”
She nodded to the duffle bag. “My past is in there.” She sat beside him and patted his thigh. Dear Lord, the man had nice legs. She shook her head. “I mean, everything in that bag reminds me of my time with Maslow. He expected his girls to dress like…you know.”
“I do.” He draped his arm around her shoulders. “Sometimes you’ve got to leave the past in the past and never dredge it up again. I’m proud of you.”

“Come here, tiger, and learn your fate,” Creighton mumbled to himself. “You’ve been tasked with defending the Supers,” he continued. He knew his job. He’d been defending his friends as long as he could remember. But meeting with the Sources? He wasn’t sure what they wanted. The Sources, the oldest beings in the universe, had called on him. When the Sources summoned a Super, he or she was to drop everything and show up. He or she would learn their fate and accept what the Sources planned. As far as he was concerned, he knew his fate—protecting his human, Vanessa, from the rogue Hunters.

He stared at the rock walls of the cave of the Sources. Who lived in such a rustic place? Sure, he was a tiger and the animal preferred the outside, but bland black and gray walls with no illumination? Come on. He needed a way to see where he was going, energy...something not here. His shoes clunked on the hard packed earth as he strode to the bit of brightness at the end of the cave. He noticed shadows moving in the faint glow. The Sources? He’d found them? Cool.

The words, I’m here, lingered on his tongue. Shouting to the ancient beings wasn’t bright. He’d wait for them to address him. The closer he got to the light, the slower he moved. A feeling of dread washed over him. This wasn’t going to be some nice, happy meeting. Nope. His tiger groaned. This wasn’t going to be pleasant at all.

“Come closer,” the Leader said. He leaned forward enough for Creighton to see his scraggly white beard, but not his face. The hood obscured the Leader’s face. The being pointed a long, bony finger at Creighton. “Do you know why you are here?"

“I’m here to learn my fate and to thank you for summoning me.” Creighton suppressed a smile. Never let it be said he had no manners. “I’m Defending the Supers, like you’ve asked.” He wondered what exactly the Leader was sitting on. Air? A rock chair? He couldn’t tell. Not knowing added to his growing alarm. Would they whisk him away to fight another part of the war and force him to leave his friends? Crazy thoughts, but then again, he wasn’t sure what to expect.

“You’re a cocky tiger.” The Leader turned over his palm. A flash of light emulated from the center of his hand. “You have been called upon because of the war. It has grown much worse than anticipated and is out of control. You need to be doing more than simply defending.”

Creighton nodded and tuned his thoughts to fight mode. “We cannot tell the rogue Hunters from the main group. The Defenders are trying their best, but without information, we feel we’re all working blind.”

“You are,” another Source said. This one sounded female. “The supernatural races depend on you.”

“Wait.” Creighton disobeyed the cardinal rule of the Sources and stepped closer to the ancient beings. “Me? Our merry band of misfits is a solid unit. You can’t mean that I am the only one who can stop this. You just told Kynan he was the one to end the war. This cannot wholly be on my head.” Good Goddess, he understood tactical maneuvers and reconnaissance, but playing with emotions and understanding the enemy weren’t his strong points.

The Source cackled. “You will grow in numbers.”

“Great.” He liked the sound of the group getting larger. Maybe they’d find some more vampires and a couple more shifters to balance them out. Or they’d be given the opportunity to have children. He wanted to make lots of children with Vanessa. “We can use all the help we can get, but you said to grow in numbers. Is having children right now a good idea?”

“Not so fast, tiger. Do you enjoy being in your human form?”
“Yes, very much.” But he didn’t like the tone change in the Sources. “Why?” More of his surroundings came into view. Black and brown streaked on the walls along with something else—figures. He tipped his head. He should’ve been listening, but the images grabbed his attention. Some of the folk art type figures looked like animals.

“To keep the human form from being locked away forever, you must find your mate. It is time you accepted that part of your fate as well,” the Source said, pulling his attention back to the situation.

“I believe I’ve found her.” Now they were getting somewhere. He’d known all along his fate lay with Vanessa and that she was his true mate. He thought about her in his dreams. Even if she turned him down, he knew where his heart belonged—with his Pasha, Vanessa.

“You believe? Tiger, there is much more to finding a mate besides belief.”

The woman he’s charged to protect is all grown up and everything he wants. Can he keep his heart under wraps while keeping her safe?

Alexa Mercury doesn’t know why she’s supposed to trust the vampire, but she does. Even when she pushed him away, Kynan watches over her. He tipped his head, listening to Alexa’s thoughts. Her boyfriend was coming over. He growled. The jackass she dated deserved a fate worse than death. He treated Lexa like garbage, but until she called Kynan, he had no right to step in. Christ, he wanted to free her from the asshole’s grip. No woman deserved to be hit.
Still, she hadn’t called for him to save her.
Kynan sniffed the air. Her perfume twisted on the wind. Screw it. He’d waited ten years for the woman he loved. No more standing by. He assumed invisibility once more and made his way across town to her apartment. Light glowed in her bedroom window and her voice drifted to where he hid in the tree.
Each day he spent away from her, he died a tiny death. Sure, he was one of the undead, but he still craved her. If he didn’t fulfill the will of the Sources, he’d meet his final death.
Alexa crossed her bedroom once more, a huge dildo in hand. Kynan bit back a curse. He knew her so well and wished it were him using the toys on her. She waved the dong at her roommate.
“Have you ever realized you’re in a bad situation, but you don’t know how to get out?” Lexa plopped on her bed and held the toy in both hands. “V, I don’t love him.”
Vanessa leaned on the doorframe. “I think he’s dirt. What about your high school sweetheart? Isn’t he still around? In a band or something?”
Kynan gripped the branch of the tree. Her high school sweetheart? He knew who she dated in school and none of them were first love status.
“I can’t.” Lexa shook her head. “I’m ashamed. He’d see what I’ve become and...it wouldn’t work.”
“Why?” Vanessa strode into the bedroom. She picked up the dildo. “You do what you want with this, but this sucker is freaking huge.” She giggled then sobered when Lexa didn’t laugh with her. “Hey, I’ve got a kinky side, too.  I know how you feel about the bondage. It’s freeing, even if you’re all tied up. But this jerk parades you around. He doesn’t respect you. Dump him already. Being alone has got to be better than being treated like dirt.”
“Or call my name,” Kynan whispered. He knew what she did with her boyfriend, Dante. Nothing turned him on more than seeing Lexa’s naked body on display, but the moment the boyfriend walked into the frame, Kynan’s desire turned to rage. He recognized the man she’d taken up with. Dante, otherwise known as Brad Bowman, vampire hunter.
“Fuck,” Kynan grunted. Brad, or Dante as she knew him, didn’t date anyone. The bastard picked his partners based on what they could give him.
Did Lexa know the truth about the socialite-slash-hunter? Probably not. She didn’t strike Kynan as the blissfully ignorant type. Despite his better judgment, he peered into her mind. The more Brad touched her, the more she visualized…Kynan?
Holy shit.
Kynan gripped the tree branch tighter. He shouldn’t play the role of a voyeur, but he’d been charged with protecting her. His heart—his emotional one, not the true one he’d lost years before—ached for her. He wanted to the be the one holding and caressing her, the one who tied her up and made her scream his name. He’d bide his time for now. Once Alexa called to him, he’d step out of the shadows and take what he wanted.
Her.
