The Becoming
by Lilith Thorn

Niamh is a good wife. She learned early on that crossing her husband had consequences. Living quietly in the shadowed cage he has formed around her, Niamh suffers his secrets and bares the scars they leave behind.

On the night of her biggest humiliation Caleb enters the ballroom changing Niamh’s course forever. He brings safety to her dark world and introduces her to the possibility of escape. Will Niamh’s love for Caleb be the key to her freedom or will it be her undoing?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now for an interview with the author!
Can you describe your dream home?
The basic requirements for my dream home would be open, light and modern. Size wouldn’t matter as long as the footprint/flow made sense. I’d love something that showcased some creativity. Nothing drastic. Gaudi is safe from any copyright infringements from me. Maybe a cool design combining tiles and wood or art work on the walls. I’d also have an outdoor/indoor shower. Walls that stretch high with no roof, which would mean that the house is located somewhere warm.
The most important part of this dream home would be to have a great community surrounding it. Friends who would come by for a glass of wine by the fire pit, to watch a Friday night movie in our living room or attend birthday parties in our yard.
If we were to come to your house for a meal, what would you give us to eat?
I’m a vegetarian, but my husband isn’t, so there would be a selection of food on the table. We like to splash out and try something new when we have guests, which is the opposite of what you’re supposed to do. The BBQ is a featured appliance at a lot of our gatherings. We’ll often put a rub on some ribs or rotisserie a chicken. Vegetarian options might also start out on the BBQ, but I’m more likely to make something with butternut squash or quinoa. In addition to the mains there is always white and red wine on the table with dessert to follow.
Tell us about the absolute BEST fan letter you have received.
I have never received a fan letter. I have received a few good reviews. My favorites are pictures of people enjoying their copy of The Becoming.
Say your publisher has offered to fly you anywhere in the world to do research on an upcoming book, where would you most likely want to go?
I’ll go almost anywhere. I love to travel. Lately I’ve been wanting to return to Ireland. It’s been about nine years since we were there last and would be lovely to take the kids to show them where we met and where are families are from. Peru and New Zealand are two bucket list destinations I haven’t been to yet, so I’d happily get on a plane and head to either of those destinations.
Who designed the book cover for the book you are touring?
I chose the cover the art, but the graphic designer at Tell Well did the rest.
Now for a Excerpt from Chapter Six:
I began to remove my clothing, feet first, when I heard the door to the sitting room open. Without hesitation, my guest walked through the room to where I sat. Caleb. I was on my feet immediately, though I had barely taken a step toward him before he had me enveloped in his arms. With both grace and speed, the perfectly made bed and my body collided with Caleb on top.
I was lost to him for what seemed like a moment and forever all at the same time. His hands and my hands both explored the figure opposite them, as if they were making sure the other was really there. Our lips were sealed to one another, tongues exploring as our hands were. My body instinctively pressed itself against his with no desire to be anywhere else. My skirts were bulky, blocking the heat from his body. My corset and Caleb’s weight made it hard to breathe and I was fighting my own instincts to tear into him with every bit of pent up desire that had accumulated since puberty.
Despite all of this, I was elated. There was nothing outside of this moment, only the feel of his lips pressed against mine, his knees pushing open my thighs to cradle his hips against my skirts, my breasts alive and begging for his touch.
The spell was broken when he pulled his face from mine, his hands searching to find a way under my many skirts.
“No hello?” I panted, smiling. Caleb smiled in return while his fingers made their way to a small patch of flesh at the top of my thighs. His hands hung onto my skin, pulsing, waiting for my permission to explore further.
“Hello.”
He leaned down to kiss me again, but this time I turned my head away. He didn’t remove his hand from its hiding place, nor did he look hurt, but he paused for a moment waiting for me to tell him to stop. His eyes locked into mine while his fingers slowly circled the flesh they were in possession of, willing to give up this action and move to higher ground if asked to do so.
I did my best to quickly assess what I wanted from him in that moment. There was a strong pull to throw caution to the wind and let him take my virginity right then and there. In fact, my hands had a strong grasp on his buttocks and seemed very unwilling to let go.
With a deep sigh, a reluctant release of his backside and a motion to sit-up, I blurted, “I was going to clean up before I came to find you.”
Better than the “I think I love you” that was on the tip of my tongue, I supposed.
Caleb rolled off me, allowing me to sit. He perched on the edge of the bed and held his hand out to me. “I can help you with that.”
There was a devilish grin on his face. While I had called a stop to our encounter this day, we both knew that the days to come would lead to my undoing.
About the Author:
Born in Dundas, ON, Lilith Thorn is a restless wanderer. Her first move was to St. Catharines where she earned a Theatre degree at Brock University. Despite her parents’ wish that she would return home and work at McDonalds after graduating, Lilith refused and instead moved to Toronto to give acting the ‘Old College Try.’ After years of sacrificing her other passions for the stage and an empty bank account, she put away those dreams to say “Yes” to a different adventure. This took her to Dublin, Ireland for a few years where she met, fell in love with, and married another Canadian who took her to the one place she said she’d never live: Yellowknife. After nearly a decade in Canada’s Great White North, Lilith looks forward to further adventures with her husband and two children, just about anywhere.
Lilith Thorn is a pen name, the pseudonym used to protect the innocent; that is, so she hopefully never has to explain to her mother-in-law over dinner that she has written an erotic novel.
EXCERPT:
A lazy trail of smoke snaked into the sky, pulling my focus a couple miles northeast of my veranda I stood upon. The setting sun caressed my left cheek as I blinked, bringing into focus the smoke’s origin. Two people sat beside the small fire, but from the distance, I couldn’t tell their sexes.
The breeze shifted the trees around me, their rustling leaves hiding my cliff-side home from view. I breathed deeply, hoping…
A blast of cooling air hit my face, and my heart stumbled. Her. My blonde goddess.
She wasn’t a dragonblood shifter, but hints of the ancient blood ran in her veins, calling to me.
Mine.
I wanted to shift, shredding my jeans and long-sleeve t-shirt, and roar my savage declaration, but refrained for fear of scaring my precious gem away.
I strode into my house, grabbed a pullover sweatshirt, a small pack, and some water. One of the two hikers was mine, and I would claim her by night’s end.
My strides ate up the land, the rock and moss beneath my feet as I hastened toward my destiny, my mind racing, thoughts filled with the woman I would soon see. The brisk breeze shifted against my back and hinted at the fall to come, but remained warm enough that being outdoors as the sun set wasn’t bothersome. Not that I would have been uncomfortable either way. The dragonblood pumping through my arteries couldn’t be cooled.
Less than an hour later, the wind still at my back, I approached another outcropping perhaps two hundred yards from where I had seen the campfire. I pulled up short as the flickering flames came into view.
Two blond, tousled heads peeked from beneath a double sleeping bag beside the ring-less firepit—two writhing bodies in the throes of passion if their movements and moans my sharp ears made out in the still evening didn’t lie.
I clenched my teeth, hands fisted at my sides, fighting off the need to shift and take what the male had no right to touch.
She’s mine.
Their erotic dance of two souls already connected held me rapt, the scent of their combined arousal lighting a fire within me. The female cried out her release, and the male followed with a groan so sensual, so fulfilled that my heart seized, sending a rush of blood into my shaft, regardless of my jealousy. I palmed my swollen length through my jeans, squeezing away the need to spill my seed inside her.
My mate.
But she loved another.
I fought back my dragon jealousy and gave into the sudden weakness in my legs, sitting on a rock hidden by the growing darkness. Their murmurs reached my ears; however, their words remained indistinct as I fought to accept what I had stumbled upon, what fate had so cruelly dangled in front of me only to snatch away.
The male tossed back the top of their sleeping bag, and the images I’d seen through their combined scent I had tasted on the breeze came into view. Not just her with her blonde hair, large breasts, and lush curves, but his muscular, taller form topped by a mess of similar blond, longer hair, the top portion of which he had pulled back into a short ponytail.
A frown flitted over my brow, but dissipated as my treasure stood, drawing my attention once more. My mouth dried as she tugged on her clothes, hiding her perfect body from me, their joyous laughter reaching across the distance. She smiled at him, the adoration in her hazel-green gaze like a knife to my heart. He caressed her cheek, her hair, his touch gentle on the one I wanted to pamper.
She already belonged to him.
I wanted to race to her, claim my female, but would she want me? Would the bonding energy between mates I had only read about draw her to me, steal her from her male? Mostly human, would she even recognize the connection between us?
The fear of rejection, of being abandoned again sent a knife-like stab through my chest. I had barely survived my love leaving me ten years earlier—nearly burned my home in the mountains to mere ash. How much more pain would being denied my true mate inflict?
Torn, I sat still as the stone beneath me, unmoving and watching as the two lovers prepared a late dinner, their movements in sync as though they had spent centuries together rather than the twenty-something years they appeared to be. I listened to their murmurs, their shared laughter. I studied them as the man banked the fire, and they both crawled back inside their sleeping bag.
I swallowed back my pain and jealousy as they curled together, two warm bodies intertwined, sharing space as only lovers can do.
The long night passed, but I couldn’t bear to leave her. Every cell in my body longed for my mate, and had I been a younger, immature dragon, I would have claimed her without a care for her feelings or her lover’s.
But, how could I inflict on the human male the same pain I had lived with for close to ten years? The heartache, the loneliness of losing the one you love? I hadn’t been given a choice—my love had left without an explanation.
I refused to inflict that on another, but by the time the sun rose, my tortured soul needed something. I needed resolution.
I would give her the chance to choose the mate she should be with or the one she had already attached herself to. It would be her choice—the male’s broken heart her doing, not mine.
My pulse raced and palms grew damp as I drew closer, the delicious aroma of ancient blood in the air flooding my mouth with saliva. I could taste her on my tongue from a hundred yards away. What would it be like once I closed the distance between us? Once I touched her skin? Would the energy crackle the distance between us or pull like a magnet enough to sway my mate into my arms?
Through all my years I never believe in any god, any higher being, but at that moment, I wished for nothing more than to trust in something bigger, something more than mere chance that my mostly-human mate would accept me. Want me.
The closer I drew, the less I cared about the male’s heartache should she choose the one she’d been destined for.
Shouldering a small pack I’d brought along to make it appear I, too, hiked the mountain trail, I moved into sight of the camp, every part of me, my dragon included, determined to have what belonged to me.
The male squatted beside the fire, putting a small pot over the coals.
“Hello,” I called out, not wanting to frighten him.
His blond head jerked up, and as he slowly stood, his blue-eyed gaze meeting mine, the energy I had hoped to share with my female expanded in waves across the short distance and wrapped around me in a connection stronger than I’d ever felt in my life.
I stumbled to a stop as my heart skipped a beat.
My mates. Both of them.
I fought to breathe, to accept what fate had given me. Two of the ancient blood. One male, one female, a bonded pair in need of their third—the necessary trio to create another dragon life.
Char Chaffin & Cheryl Yeko
Senior Acquiring Editors, Soul Mate Publishing
We’ve been friends since 2011, when we both came onboard Soul Mate Publishing with our debut novels. We got to know each other virtually, and by the time we met in person at our first romance conference—Atlanta in 2013—it was as if we’d known each other forever. Soon, we both became acquiring editors with Soul Mate, cementing an already strong friendship.
During RWA Atlanta, we’d tossed around writing something together, and after one frenetic brainstorming evening came up with our first co-written book, Rodeo King, which debuted in 2014. We were thrilled when Rodeo King finaled in the 2016 Heart of Excellence Readers’ Choice Awards.
We had so much fun writing together, we decided to keep doing it, and agreed a pen name was in order. CiCi’s first name was easy, since both our names start with ‘C.’ All we needed was a last name. Eventually we came up with ‘Cordelia’ which means ‘heart,’ and our tagline is ‘Writing From The Heart.’
We talk on the phone frequently; every day if we’re working on a project. In the fall of 2015, we were chatting as usual, and started toying with the idea of a long-range book/series project we could develop as editors, showcasing some of Soul Mate’s talented authors. Cheryl came up with the idea of an ancient ‘Soul Mate Tree’ that had the power to connect soul mates together over time and space. Once we started mulling it over, the idea became all-consuming; we began making lists and setting parameters. We saw it as a multi-author effort, taking place over the course of a year, one book release at a time. When we presented the idea to Soul Mate Owner and Senior Editor Debby Gilbert, she fell in love with the premise and gave it her professional blessing.
We needed a hook for our project. Since Char used to write poetry, she collected the physical attributes and magical abilities of the tree, items we had already decided upon, and sketched out a poem.
Together, we polished it up, and ‘The Legend of the Soul Mate Tree’ was born:
I am old, I am ancient, my purpose is clear
To give those who are needy a treasure so dear.
They who come to my roots, touch my bark, stroke my leaves
Find the soul of their lives if they but believe.
When I call and you listen, your prize will be great
If your heart remains open and you don’t hesitate.
Do you yearn? Be you lonely? Is your time yet at hand?
Reach for me and I’ll give to you. I’m yours to command.
For your trust, for your faith, keep my secrets untold
And I’ll gift you forever, to have and to hold.
Once we set everything in motion amongst our authors and culled interest from a dozen interested writers, the project took on a life of its own.
It was decided CiCi Cordelia should head up the project by releasing the first book. More brainstorming ensued. During another marathon phone chat, we chose dragon shifters as a fun idea, and the bones of Realm of the Dragon began forming. The outline came together fast, and by the time we managed to squeeze in two writing retreats in between conferences during summer 2016, the rest of the story seemed to write itself.
Cheryl created a sexy little promo trailer for Realm of the Dragon that we’d love to share with you. https://youtu.be/YKFSkLDKpP4
Elizabeth in the New World
by Maggie Mooha
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Jane Austen's most famous lovers, Darcy and Elizabeth, return in a tale of romance, adventure, and danger set in the heart of the Caribbean.

NO GREATER LOVE

Darcy’s sudden, passionate kiss sweeps Elizabeth into a bliss she has never known...but their love is short-lived. On a field of honor, Wickham, once again, engages in an irresponsible act, which leaves Darcy mortally wounded and Elizabeth broken. Refusing to leave Darcy’s side, the last vestiges of her reputation are shattered, and when Elizabeth sees Darcy in his coffin, she is ruined in more ways than one. Devastated and without hope, reluctantly she agrees to accompany friends to Grenada, a Caribbean island on the brink of revolution.

Things are not what they seem. Darcy hasn’t died, but Elizabeth is gone and he fears it is too late to recapture what he has lost. As he struggles to recuperate, he must put aside his pride and his heritage in order to find the only woman he will ever love. Never before has Darcy sacrificed so much for a passion he fought against so vehemently. And never before has Elizabeth’s strength of character been stronger - it is the only thing standing between her and an end that doesn’t include Darcy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now for an Excerpt:
She was grateful for all he was doing for her, and for her family despite its low connections and its unseemly behavior. Gratitude, however, was not her overwhelming emotion at that moment. She wanted him to take her in his arms. She wanted to kiss him good-bye, again and again. He turned to look at her once more.
She swallowed hard. His eyes. They bore into her like a dagger. It was now or never. What if he were killed? What if he lay in his grave never knowing that she loved him? He was prepared to sacrifice everything for her, his position, his reputation, his wealth, and now he was prepared to sacrifice his life. Could she hold her reputation above that?
He turned away from her and headed to the door. She could not let him go without telling him of her feelings. What if he was mistaken? What if Wickham killed her father and killed him too?
As he opened the door and exited, she said in a barely audible tone, “I love you.” She waited for the click of the door. It did not come.
The door opened again, and Darcy entered the room once more.
“What did you say?” he asked.
She faltered for a moment, then repeated, “I love you,” louder this time. It all happened in an instant. She did not move and yet she was in his arms. He strode across the room with such force that he lifted her off the ground. The touch of his body was intoxicating. Suddenly, a dark cloud crossed his face, and he let her down. He still had not kissed her.
“Perhaps you are only grateful to me,” he said, pulling away slightly, but not letting go of her. Oh no, no, he would know. She reached up and caressed his cheek.
“How can you doubt me?” she asked. “Do you think I do not know my own mind?”
She watched his face. His eyes searched hers as if he would find in them the truth he wanted to know. She touched his face again. He kissed her.
About the Author:
I’ve always been a storyteller. When I was little, I used to tell my sister stories before we went to
sleep. Most of them were serials – Superman and the like. It never occurred to me until much later in life that I should try my hand at writing.
Most of my career, I’ve been a music teacher. I’ve found music such a help when crafting a story. I actually see the structure of a book as if it was a musical composition. As for the nuts and bolts of my life, I grew up in the Chicago area and was a teacher there for quite a few years. I had a chance to teach at an international school in Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania, and I spent two years there. After adopting my son, we spent four years at an international school in the Philippines. During that time, I began writing. Now I live in the western U.S.
Most of my work has been screenplays. Over the years, I’ve won or placed well in competitions. I’m telling you this so you don’t think I sat down one day and wrote a novel out of the blue. I’ve spent many years working and learning.
A long time ago someone called me “an insatiable romantic.” I hope that's still true.
LOVE AND SACRIFICE
Omegas choose their mates, and Lily had been certain Jensgar would be happy she had chosen him. Instead, the former general of the king's army refused her, forcing her to the leave the pack she'd adopted. Humiliated and heartbroken, she returns to the Black Ridge Pack, only to find the pitying glances and hushed comments too much to bear. She has no home, and no one to call her own. Convinced she has no other choice, she flees to the forest to live as a wolf. She is shocked when Jensgar, in wolf form, comes for her, and slowly convinces her to trust him again. But the woods hold secrets, and danger. When Jensgar's life is threatened, Lily gives up everything to save the man she loves, and once again puts her chance for happiness in peril.
He stepped onto his front porch and couldn’t help but stop to look at the display of color in front of him. Another gift from Lily. The blooms she’d coaxed to weave up the posts and across the railings stretched outward to reach the late afternoon sun.
Jensgar could picture the sunny day she’d given him this gift as if it were yesterday. She’d been working in the fields helping the pack farmers with planting their new crops. Lily had the gift of fertility, among others, and shared it with anyone who needed it. He had watched over her while she remained in the fields, not a hard task in the least. He felt a certain contentment when he was with her that he’d not felt in well over one hundred years.
Lily had spent most of the day out in the hot fields. He’d gone to her to escort her back to the pack house. She’d finished the second bottle of water he’d made her drink, not wanting her to become dehydrated, as they’d passed his cottage. She stopped midstride and stared at his humble home. He had been a bit self-conscious when she walked up to the gardens and sunk her hands into the earth.
Vines had sprouted almost instantly and wrapped themselves around the front railing before climbing up the timber walls. When she’d finished the front of his house, Lily stood back and viewed her creation with a satisfied smile. At the time, Jensgar hadn’t realized how poignant and appropriate her next words would be.
“Something to remember me by.” She’d smiled at him but nothing could hide her sadness.
Now, Jensgar buried his face in the soft blooms and breathed deeply. For a brief second he felt her presence, but all too soon it was gone. In time, Lily would understand that he’d done what was best for her future. She was a powerful omega destined to lead a pack, not to settle down with a has-been. Sure, he’d been the general of armies, chosen by the king himself, but now as he approached his four hundredth year it was only a matter of time before he’d be retired for someone younger.
Beatrice stared dumbstruck at Lord Knowlton’s back.
Lady Sherbourne, her godmama, had introduced them, hissing behind her fan, “The only son of an old duke. Nothing like jumping in with both feet.” And then she had carted Mama off to the card room, leaving Beatrice to get on as best she could.
Lord Knowlton, in turn, had given Beatrice a look like she was a crate of dry goods dropped at the delivery door.
Now, after a truly dreadful dance, he wasn’t even giving her that. Instead, without so much as a bow, he was chasing after a girl whose tiny bodice had been performing heroic, if ultimately futile, work in aid of public decency.
Beatrice looked after him, furrowing her brow, the shock of his rudeness rooting her in place. So little was demanded of the clod—light conversation, a few observations on the weather this time of year and, finally, after they’d both decided they would rather die than be paired off again, he would escort her from the floor and they’d declare it the nicest half-hour either of them had ever spent.
But, no. The slithering reptile was completely gone. She stared after him in bewildered outrage until the sound of the room changed. No music for the moment and no sound of footsteps walking on and off the floor, only a low chatter ebbing away.
Beatrice looked around, the hairs on her arms standing up. She was suddenly alive to the fact that she was the only person conspicuously still on the vast ballroom floor—almost in the centre. She ground her teeth, incandescent with fear and rage, as her face went a telltale red.
How dare London be such a crushing disappointment? How dare it serve up a man who was no better than a… a…? There were no names she could think of that would not be an insult to idiots, vermin, and bastards.
Heads were beginning to swing toward her and Beatrice felt her cheeks turn white, leached of colour. Should she walk backward until she could melt into the crowd or pretend to answer a wave across the room and dash off purposefully? Flying out of the room was hardly possible. The back of her neck prickled and she could feel eyes sweeping around the ballroom, stopping on her lone figure.
If Mama and Papa had allowed her even one visit to the local assembly, she might not be so utterly at sea. Still, Mama would charge to her rescue, if only she could be found. Beatrice stretched her neck and raised herself onto her tiptoes, ready to fabricate an acquaintance over near the tea board—the shame of it making her eyes burn. Blast that man.
In the dreadful silence, she heard a scuffing sound and turned to watch as a soldier in a scarlet uniform broke past the wall of bystanders. He walked toward her, his steps unnaturally loud in the silence. “Thank you for waiting for me,” he called, his voice amused but apologetic, and loud enough to carry to the edge of the floor. “I’ve been looking forward to this set all evening.”
He bowed over her hand and whispered a command: “Chin up. Smile like you’re happy to see me.”
Beatrice squeezed this stranger’s fingers, feeling an immediate lightness. Her breath broke as she exhaled, but she was proud of her control. Her lips arranged themselves into the proper shape.
“Good show,” he commended, and the praise warmed her. “Captain Gracechurch, at your service. Your name, miss?”
“If I’m honest, you weren’t the husband I dreamed of having. It was hard, adjusting to an existence I didn’t expect. I shut myself off from the world.” I finally looked at him. “From you.”
He reached out, cupping my face with his hand. “You don’t have to shut yourself off from me anymore.”
My throat tightened, like a lump of root got caught in it. I swallowed hard, watching the light dance across his lips.
We had kissed—of course we had—though not much. What would it would be like to kiss him now that I knew him better and actually wanted to kiss him? That there’d be emotion behind the action?
But would he kiss me back? Was it a risk worth taking?
His gaze lured me in, making me lean forward.
