Out Now—On Her High Horse by Lucy Felthouse (@cw1985) #romance #medical #cougar

Out Now—On Her High Horse by Lucy Felthouse (@cw1985) #romance #medical #cougar

Do first impressions always last?

When veterinarian Brett Coulson and stable owner Samantha Hanson-Bishop meet, it’s hate at first sight. He thinks she’s a snobby, stuck-up bitch who wouldn’t know nice if it bit her on the backside. She thinks he’s a blundering, inexperienced little boy who shouldn’t be within fifty miles of her prized horses. But it doesn’t matter much—they’ll never have to see each other again. Or will they?

When fate throws them into the same room together at a charity fundraiser, the resentment between them quickly resurfaces. But mixed in with that resentment is something they both tried to deny… attraction. Will the chemistry between them cancel out the animosity, or were their first impressions just too powerful to change?

Note: On Her High Horse was previously published in the Coming in Hot Boxed Set.

Now for an excerpt:
There was a knock at the door. Brett looked up from where he was transferring hand-written notes onto the practice’s computer system—he hadn’t yet gotten comfortable with taking the iPad out on calls. He was paranoid he’d drop it in a cow pat, or worse. “Yes, come in!”
One of the veterinary surgery’s receptionists—an efficient blonde called Natasha—sidled in, a wry expression on her face. “Hi, Brett. I’m really sorry to bother you, but there’s a woman on the phone, and she’s being, um, rather rude.”
Frowning, Brett replied, “Who is it? And why is she being rude?”
Natasha blew out a breath and shrugged. “She won’t tell me what the issue is. Won’t even tell me what animal she has. She just keeps saying she’ll only speak to a ‘trained professional.’ I don’t know who it is, either. All I know is her first name is—”
“Samantha?” Brett supplied, his shoulders slumping and eyebrows raising.
“Uh, yeah. How did you know? Oh God, I haven’t gone and insulted one of your friends or something, have I? I didn’t mean to, honestly. It’s just she’s being a bit difficult…”
“Natasha, don’t panic. She’s no friend of mine. I’ve never even met the woman. Besides, if she was one of my friends, I’d be giving her a bollocking for being rude to one of my staff, wouldn’t I? Anyway, if it’s the Samantha I think it is, then she’s being very difficult, and you’re being overly polite. Andrew warned me about her.”
“He did?”
“Yeah. Bloody typical that she’d phone while he’s away. The man barely ever takes a holiday, and now he finally has, his most awkward client is on the blower. He damn well owes me one after this.”
“If she’s a regular client, how come I’ve never spoken to her before?”
Shrugging, Brett replied, “Dunno. Maybe she’s got Andrew’s mobile number or something?”
Natasha gasped. “But he never gives out his mobile number to clients. He’s very strict about that—always asks us to take a message and if it’s urgent, pass it on to him directly.”
“Yeah…” Brett scratched his head. “He didn’t say much about her, beyond that she can be difficult. Honestly, I was a bit distracted when he mentioned it so I wasn’t paying a great deal of attention. I wish I’d asked more questions now, but I never thought I’d have the misfortune of having to deal with her.”
“You haven’t, yet.” Natasha raised her eyebrows and jerked her chin towards the phone on his desk.
“Good point.” He gave a wan smile. “Suppose I’d better find out what she wants, hadn’t I? If she’s special enough to have Andrew’s precious mobile phone number, then I ought to keep her sweet.”
“Probably wise.” Natasha left the room, closing the door behind her, but not before Brett spotted the slight smile on her face. Relieved to pass on the bitchy customer to him, no doubt.
Taking a deep breath, he picked up the phone. “Hello, Brett Coulson speaking. How can I help?”
“Oh,” came the reply, “Brett. Ah, yes. You’re the other vet, aren’t you? Jolly good. Know what you’re talking about, do you?” The woman’s accent was posh, southern. Like she’d been to a finishing school or something.
Gritting his teeth, Brett then pasted a smile on his face, hoping it would be apparent in his tone, despite the daggers he was actually staring at her through the handset. “Yes, I most certainly do.” Should fucking do, after five years of training and the same again working in the profession. I’m not on bloody work experience here.
“But you sound so young.”
Glad she couldn’t see him, Brett rolled his eyes. Her problem obviously wasn’t an emergency, the way she was waffling on, time-wasting. “I’m almost twenty-nine, Mrs…”
“It’s Ms, actually. Samantha Hanson-Bishop here. So you’re still a baby then.”
“Is there something I can help you with, Ms Hanson-Bishop? Only I’ve a call to go out on in a few minutes.” He couldn’t help the emphasis he’d put on the Ms. It could be construed as sarcastic, but it was still a damn sight more polite than anything he really wanted to say. Would she just get to the point already?
“Yes, yes, of course. That’s why I’m telephoning. I just wanted to make sure I was speaking to someone who actually knew what they were talking about. Clearly your receptionist doesn’t know anything about animals, much less my thoroughbred horses.”
Ah, okay, that made things clearer. The stuck-up, posh bird ran a stable. Now the haughty attitude made sense—she was entitled, bored, and thought she was better than everyone else. Wanting to defend Natasha—who was, in fact, very knowledgeable about animals, it being part of her job and all—Brett had to bite his tongue. If the woman, however snobby and irritating, ran a stable of thoroughbreds, then she was no doubt bringing plenty of money into the practice. They were doing okay, but the loss of a big customer without a replacement wasn’t something they’d be able to sustain for very long. And word of mouth was very important in this game—he didn’t want her bad-mouthing him or the surgery.

Blurb Blitz ~ Parent Teacher Association by Jennifer Soosar

Jennifer Soosar will be awarding a $10 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Want more chances to win? Then follow the tour here: http://goddessfishpromotions.blogspot.com/2017/06/blurb-blitz-tour-parent-teacher.html

Parent Teacher Association
by Jennifer Soosar

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Fresh out of a mental hospital, Lizanne Demeter is thrilled to get a second chance at her career when she's hired to teach third grade in the backwater town of Splinter Wood, Pennsylvania. But hopes for a peaceful new life are ruined when demanding ‘helicopter mom’ Naomi Seabrook pushes Lizanne to the brink.
While struggling to maintain control of her classroom, Lizanne begins to unravel the secret behind Naomi’s hell-bent agenda. As deadly clues emerge, Lizanne suspects Naomi is guilty of more than just overindulging her child.
With her life teetering on chaos, Lizanne risks everything to expose the shocking truth. But first, she must race against her own spiraling sanity to prove herself a more dedicated teacher than anyone dared imagine—the kind of teacher who makes ALL the difference.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now for an Excerpt:

“See, here’s the problem with single female teachers,” Naomi said. “You got no life. You put an inappropriate amount of attention on insignificant things and work them up into a froth. There’s no perspective in your sad, one-dimensional world.”

Let that pass, Lizanne thought. You’re getting somewhere now.

“Don’t like me asking questions?”

“I don’t like you snooping around in areas that are none of your business,” Naomi said, eyeballs bulging. “Ruth made an error hiring you. You’re too weird, if that’s even possible. And know what else? You’re a lousy teacher! Sebastian is miserable in your class. I tried communicating that with you, but you’re clueless!”

The words stung—you’re a lousy teacher—and Lizanne labored to sweep it away.

“You’re easily the worst teacher in Battle Hill history and I’m including my own years spent there as a student.”

Sebastian appeared in the doorway.

“This so-called teacher of yours is useless,” Naomi said to him. “I’m amazed she dares to call herself a teacher at all.”

When he snickered, Lizanne felt crippled.

“Look how you allowed that poor child to climb that tree and fall to his death,” Naomi said, advancing with the box cutter. “That was all your fault, wasn’t it?”

Feeling tears come, Lizanne rushed to grab her coat.

Naomi followed. “Go ahead, keep thinking it was an accident, if that makes your stark life more bearable. But we both know it wasn’t…”

Sensing a grim truth had just been spoken, Lizanne found a sudden poise. She turned to face Naomi. “No, it wasn’t an accident, was it?” she said. “It couldn’t have been.”

Blog Tour ~ Sweat by Coco Gem

Welcome CoCo Gem to the blog today and also her book, Sweat. You'll want to hang around after you read my interview with her. She's promoting her new book, Sweat, and there are prizes to be won! Yeah. Coco Gem will be awarding a $10 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Want more chances to win? Then follow the tour. You can do that here: http://goddessfishpromotions.blogspot.com/2017/05/vbt-sweat-by-coco-gem.html

Now for the interview!
1. Describe yourself in three words.

I am emotional, intelligent, and very empathetic. It was hard for me to think of three words to describe myself, so I had to ask someone else. I agree with her assessment.

2. Cast your book. Tell us who would play the main characters in a movie and why.
This book is a compilation of several short stories, and each story is told from the perspective of a different female character.

3. What’s your favorite love scene from a movie?
I think my favorite love scene from a movie is the basketball scene at the end of Love and Basketball when Monica plays Quentin for his heart. It was so painful and intense, which, I think, mimics what love is really like. It’s a gamble, and we all take risks when we decide to love. We have to bet everything we have that things will work out, but be prepared to pick up the pieces and move on if it doesn’t. I love Monica’s audacity in this scene. Her courage is amazing.

4. What’s your wildest fantasy?
I want to get married. I’m 35, and have been engaged three times. There has always been something scary about love, something that would not allow me to stick around and make the lifetime commitment. I think I’m ready. So I guess my greatest fantasy would actually be to get married.

5. If you were to lose one of your senses, which would you rather lose and why?
I’d lose the sense of smell. I think it’s the one I could adjust to being without the quickest.

6. What is the naughtiest thing you did as a kid?
I wrote my name on the hood of my mother’s car with a nail. I didn’t like being in trouble, so that’s about as naughty as I got. Boring, right?

Now for the Quickies! The fast and funny questions!!

Boxers or Briefs?
I prefer boy shorts. They’re comfortable. I used to wear thongs all the time, but the older I get, the more annoying that perpetual wedgie feels.

Top or Bottom?
Bottom

Pajamas or nude?
Depends. Mostly nude.

Hairy chests or smooth?

smooth

Alpha or Beta?
Alpha by choice… and it’s exhausting sometimes

Now for a little bit about... Sweat!!

Sweat
by Coco Gem

“The Tryst” tells the story of one woman desperate for the approval of her very dominant partner and the lengths she is willing to go to in order to earn it.

“Me, Her, and Him” suggests that the best way to get over an old man is to get under a new one... especially when his gorgeous wife comes as part of the deal.

From stories of love and passion like “The Elevator” to stories of sheer carnal, insatiable desire like “Bad Girl,” Sweat chronicles the stories of women who take control of their sexuality and go after what satisfies them most—at any cost.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now an Excerpt from "The Tryst" ~
I take a swig from my flask to calm my nerves. I sit and wait a few minutes for my hands to stop shaking. Another swig. A deep breath. I close my eyes as I feel the warmth of the vodka consuming my body, and I will myself to calm down.
I am sitting in my car on this quiet side street, waiting for the butterflies in my stomach to subside.  My makeup is perfectly applied, and my sexy lips are covered in bright red lipstick. My short, tight dress, under which I am wearing a red lace thong, barely covers my ass. On my feet are heels appropriate only for the bedroom or for the stage and my full breasts are straining against the thin fabric of my dress. My body is absolutely perfect, and my shaved pussy is already wet with anticipation. I refuse to lose my nerve. Tonight, I will go through with my plan. All the pieces are in place.
I examine my reflection in the rearview mirror and decide my already perfect pout needs more red lipstick. As I reach up to apply it, the 3-carat diamond in my wedding ring catches the glow of the streetlight outside, and I immediately pause. My heart, which had just slowed to its normal pace, starts racing again. I almost- ALMOST- start the car and abandon my mission.
I am the wife of one of the most prominent attorneys in our city. I am beautiful, I am charming and charismatic, I am well-educated, the very epitome of grace and class. I keep our home immaculate, and our children are well-behaved, well-mannered angels. All I have ever known is opulence. I wear my long hair perfectly styled, because it is important I remain camera ready at all times. I love the woman I am. I love my husband.
I love my life.
Tonight, however, I am preparing myself to be explored, degraded, and fucked in ways my husband could never imagine fucking me. I pull my ring off and put it in my glove compartment. I say a silent prayer that I remember to put it back on when the night is over.
I gulp from my flask again. And I wait.
Now for more about The Bull Riding Witch by Jamie Merchant
Daulphina’s father, the king of Asteria, has always wanted a male heir. Unfortunately for him, Daulphina’s magic means that will never happen unless her bastard half-brother displaces her on the throne. But she’ll take on all the gods herself before she lets that happen. He isn’t nice enough to be a good king.
But apparently, the gods don’t like being challenged because she’s flung across the void and into the dumpy old trailer and chiselled body of Joshua Killenyen, a rodeo bull rider from Alabama. With nothing to eat but Frosted Flakes and no knowledge how she got there, she better find a way home before she gets her head stomped in by the bulls she must ride. Or her brother will take the throne and reduce her people to slavery. Remember, he isn’t nice.
Now for an excerpt!
I dreamed I saw myself cowering in the corner of my bedroom, dressed only in my shift. Well, it looked like me with my long curly blonde hair and slight built, but somehow, I wasn’t inside the dream figure. I was watching as if it were a play. My eyes were wide and looking wildly around the room. The door opened, and my maid Sylvia came in. “Your Highness, what’s wrong?” she asked.
“I have boobs, that’s what’s wrong!”
By Cernuous, was I watching Joshua inhabiting my body?
Sylvia sighed. “Your Highness, I know things would have been easier for you if you had been born a man, but isn’t it time you dressed?” She held up one of my favorite green dresses. It had leaves and purple flowers embroidered around the edges.
Joshua put up his hands. “I ain’t wearing no dress! Oh, God, how did I get here? And where the hell is here? This sure as hell ain’t my trailer!” He looked around at the large canopy bed, its woodwork carved into a pattern of dragons; the two huge wardrobes with matching dragons on the doors; the ornate chairs covered in embroidered silk; and the marble fireplace. “Looks like some Louis XIV’s palace or something.”
Sylvia’s face creased with concern. “Your Highness, are you all right?”
He wrapped his arms around himself. “Hell no! Haven’t you heard what I’ve been saying? Somebody turned me into a woman!”
Sylvia set down the dress and felt his forehead. “You don’t feel like you have a fever, but . . . should I fetch a physician?”
“No, fetch whoever turned me into a goddamned woman and make him turn me back!”
About the Author:
Jamie began writing stories about the man from Mars when she was six, and she never remembers wanting to be anything other than a writer. Everyone told her she needed a back up plan, so she pursued a Ph.D. in American literature, which she received in 1998. She started teaching writing and literature at Auburn University. One day in the midst of writing a piece of literary criticism, she realized she’d put her true passion on the backburner and neglected her muse. The literary article went into the trash, and she began the book that was to become her first novel. She writes about the fantastic . . . and the tortured soul. Her poor characters have hard lives. She still teaches writing and literature at Auburn University. She is the mother of a grown son.
A Convenient Risk
by Sara R. Turnquist
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

He never imagined her heart would be so hard to reach.

Forced into a marriage of convenience after her husband dies, Amanda Haynes is determined she will never love again. Not that it bothers Brandon Miller. He needs her husband’s cattle. She needs financial stability and long-term support for her son and herself. But she never expected to care so much about the running of the ranch. Or the rancher.

Butting heads over the decisions of the ranch, adding to her frustration and grief at her loss. Her wellbeing is soon threatened as their lives become entangled with Billy the Kid and his gang. What has she gotten herself into? What kind of man has she married? Is there any way out?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now for an excerpt:
“Are you unwell?” Brandon moved toward her.
She stepped back, bumping into the counter. “No. I am well enough.” Amanda pulled her hands around her back.
Was she frightened of him? He halted his progress, and she seemed to breathe easier.
He opened his mouth, but the right words wouldn’t come. Floundering for a moment, he closed his lips and swallowed past a lump in his throat.
Couldn’t he just reach out and take her in his arms? Wouldn’t that make everything better? But that was not the answer.
She bit at her lip, but held his eyes. “I…was just looking for something to eat.”
Brandon nodded. She had missed dinner. “Are you better?”
Nodding, her face turned in the direction of the floor. Her hair fell in waves to both sides of her face. Did she not usually gather it in a braid for bed? His face warmed at the realization that he knew something so intimate about her. At length, he spoke into the silence, “I was worried.”
She met his gaze again. Was that moisture in her eyes? Had he made her upset?
Brandon took a step forward. “Please.” He held out his hands. “I know we haven’t always had the best of understanding between us. But I wish…” Pausing, he looked off to the side. Then secured her eyes again. “Tell me what’s wrong?”
Amanda appeared as if she were ready to climb on top of the counter to escape him somehow, but after some moments, her shoulders relaxed. And then a tear fell.
He held his breath, praying she would speak.
Now for an Excerpt:
Ben wasn’t sure how it had happened. But he’d gotten lucky and landed in the water.  He’d just missed hitting his head on the way down. He’d seen Dan fall overboard but then he’d fallen over himself.  It didn’t matter, he’d planned to swim to shore anyway.  He’d shot Dan first and he’d gone over a dead man.  The yacht was on autopilot, its navigational system dead, heading somewhere out to sea.  In other circumstances he might have laughed.  It would keep the authorities occupied trying to find the boat.
 There was only one threat left and that was the little witch of a daughter Dan had managed to dump in the life raft.  There’d been nothing he could do to stop him.  It had all happened so fast.  He felt a twinge of regret.  Now Dan was gone and the yacht was already too far away to be a consideration.  He’d raised the anchor before the altercation began.
He swam toward shore. He’d locked in his mind in what direction and how far away they had drifted.  Yet the weather system was moving in faster than had been reported.  It was a squall, and that and his aching shoulder had him gulping water and struggling as the weather worsened.  Combine the weather with the fact his clothes weighed him down, and it was rough going.  He reached down, wrestling with the laces of his oxfords, finally managing to get them off and tie them to the belt loop of his pants.  It wasn’t supposed to go like this.  He wished he hadn’t had to kill Dan, but once he’d made the decision, he’d accomplished what he meant to.  He’d shot Dan and he’d fallen overboard.  Now there was only one problem he had to resolve before he became a rich man.  The one fly in the ointment was Dan’s daughter.  She wasn’t supposed to be on the yacht.  Yet, there she’d been like it was her right.  He hadn’t liked her the first and only other time he’d met her.
She’d heard too much and she’d injured him.  Neither offense could be forgiven.  A wave pushed him backward and had him swallowing water.  He choked and flipped onto his back, resting, thinking.  He had to get to shore and then he had to find Ava Adams, and when he did, the little witch had to die.
About the Author:
The Canadian prairies are my home and while the prairie landscape is blessed with beautiful blue skies, it also has four seasons that come on full throttle – especially winter and because of that I like to travel.  Often on those trips, stories are born.
In 2011 I won my city's writing award, and was the first romance writer to do so since its inception.  In 2013 my romantic suspense was a semi-finalist in the Kindle Book Awards.  Published in historic romance and paranormal romance as well as romantic suspense, in February 2016, my first novel was published by Harlequin Intrigue.
There’s no lack of places to set a story as my imagination and the too long prairie winters may find me seeking adventure.  The memories of those worlds both near and far, the words of a stranger, the furtive look one man gives another, often become the catalyst for a suspenseful story with a deadly villain and an intrepid hero and heroine who must battle for their right to love or even their right to live.
When not dreaming of other stories, I can be found scouting out a garage sale or two, dusting off my roller blades or just thinking about the next adventure that may be miles away or in my own backyard.
