The Responsible Adult Series
by C F White
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Responsible Adult series follows bad boy Micky O’Neill as he attempts to better his life to bring up his disabled little brother. A past full of juvenile delinquency and living in a small town rife with idle gossip means Micky struggles to be seen as anything other than a no-hoper from the wrong side of the tracks... until he takes a job at the local supermarket and meets his boss, Dan, a university graduate and self-proclaimed shy, awkward bookworm.Dan, older and burned from a past relationship, is the one person who sees through Micky’s tough-guy facade to the true heart underneath. With fear and mistrust on both sides, the two must steer their way through a complicated relationship where outside forces are determined to break them up at every turn.
Responsible Adult is a series about growing up and learning that love always brings responsibility.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Book One - Misdemeanor:
Love isn’t
always responsible
After his
mother tragically dies and his deadbeat father goes off the rails,
nineteen-year-old Micky is left to care for his disabled little brother, Flynn.
Juggling
college, a dead-end job and Flynn’s special needs means Micky has to put his
bad-boy past behind him and be the responsible adult to keep his brother out of
care. He doesn’t have time for anything else in his life.
Until he meets
Dan…
EXCERPT!
Dan froze. He
couldn’t move. He meant to have walked back out of the locker room as soon as
he’d given Micky the key, but his previously keen legs were now finding it hard
to take him anywhere. It wasn’t so much the body that had him grounded—the body
was an absolute delight in itself, no doubt about that, and it was a close
toss-up as to what Dan had appreciated more today, the apple pie consumed
earlier or the fine specimen of male stripping down to his boxers in front of
him right then.
Micky had
defined muscles with smooth white skin and was stockier than he appeared with
his jumper on. But what had Dan stuck to the floor, mouth gaping in a shocking
display of corporate unprofessionalism, was the large tattoo etched down
Micky’s right side torso. A black Celtic dragon. The triangle point of the tail
started at his hip bone and the rest of the black ink drew out the sketched
mythical beast, ending with a triangle tongue at just above his pectoral line.
It was a work of art and something Dan had never laid eyes on before. He
discovered his eyes quite liked it and didn’t want to look at anything else
ever again.
Micky caught
the stare and shuffled his feet.
“My mum was
Welsh,” he heard Micky say, possibly by way of explanation and even more probably
because this wasn’t the first time he had been gawked at after taking off his
top. Nor, Dan doubted, would it be the last.
Book
Two – Hard Time:
Love isn't always responsible.
After Micky O’Neill is remanded in custody for breaching his
court order, his already tempestuous relationship with Dan Peters is tested to
the limits.
Having to battle their way through a court case that could
end with Micky in jail, social workers breaking up the family home and the
return of Micky’s deadbeat father, it seems everything is set to destroy their
relationship before it even has the chance to start.
With such high stakes involved, not just for Micky but for
once-burned, twice-shy Dan, they both have to learn that falling in love isn’t
always responsible.
EXCERPT!
“I think you’re right,” Dan said.
Micky glanced up, finally looking Dan in the eye. Dan smiled
and saw the ease of Micky’s shoulders. He nodded at Flynn.
“Wales would be good for him,” Dan explained.
Micky peered back to his brother and watched for a while. He
breathed in deeply and scratched at the contents within his pockets. Dan could
practically see the thinking process going on behind his eyes. He had to bite
his tongue not to demand that Micky spill whatever was on his mind.
“We could go now,” Micky finally said, still looking out at
his brother.
Dan glided the hand ruffling through Micky’s hair down to
his back and let it drift away. He shuffled and searched his brain for a
response. He seriously hoped Micky wasn’t suggesting what he thought he was.
Running now could never be an option. He knew that. Micky would know that. The
question was, he supposed, did Micky really care at this point?
“What?” Dan urged quietly.
“Fuck all this, Dan,” Micky said more forcefully and scraped
his hands out of his trousers to slap down to his thighs. “Why wait around in
fucking limbo, letting other people decide what happens to me? To him.” Micky
waved a hand in Flynn’s general direction and turned to finally look Dan in the
eye. “To us,” he stated poignantly.
“Micky—” Dan cautioned.
“What, Dan?” Micky scorned. “This place is toxic. For me.
For Flynn. I’ve never really understood that until now. Until you.” Micky
twisted to face Dan and glided a thumb across his cheek. “There’s a shit ton of
bad memories on every street corner here. I need to start fresh. You said you’d
always come find me. Or wait for me. But will you follow me?”
Book
Three - Reformed:
Someone has to be responsible.
Micky O’Neill and Dan Peters now live in Wales, bringing up
Micky’s disabled little brother away from small-minded Heathwood and close to
Micky’s deceased mother’s family.
Things are fine…until Dan begins his dream career as an
English teacher at the local school and Micky, main caregiver to Flynn, is
isolated in a village that only serves to remind him of his mother’s absence.
With Flynn’s health deteriorating and his needs becoming
more complex, everything is tested to its limits and Dan seeks solace in a
friendship with a fellow teacher, sending Micky into further turmoil.
After an accusation is leveled against Micky and it seems
he’s slipping back into his old ways, he and Dan are torn asunder. To repair
the rift, both have to accept responsibility—for life.
EXCERPT!
“I miss you, Dimples.”
Dan exhaled. Which probably sounded like a hurricane down
the phone. At least Micky chuckled.
“I miss you, too, baby.” Dan curled his hand around the
wooden pillar and squeezed, regardless of the splinters it could cause to his
palm. “Real bad.”
“I’m going to get better, Dan. I promise.”
Dan blinked. Micky sounded like he was slurring, or that
could have been the added distance and crackle of signal going in and out of
range.
“What do you mean?”
“I’m a shit boyfriend. I know I am. When I get back, I’m
going to be better. I swear to fucking God, when Flynn gets outta here, I’m
gonna get my head screwed on.”
Dan stumbled forward down the front step, doing his utmost
to get a better range of signal. Micky’s voice was garbled and not just because
he was pouring his heart out.
“Micky, baby.” Dan sat on one of the wooden benches and
rested his elbows on his knees. He was shaking. He didn’t like the way Micky
was talking.
“And, y’know, screw you good and proper.”
Dan laughed, but it was drowned out by the raucous one that
wafted from the open pub door when a man popped out to light up a cigarette.
Dan stood and fumbled farther away from the entrance to the edge of the car
park.
“Where are you?”
Dan scrunched up his face. He spun to look back at the Old
Red Lion. He should tell the truth. But something in Micky’s voice made him
twist and bundle farther into the darkened valley.
“At home. Just putting the rubbish out.”
Dan closed his eyes. There was a brief pause the other end
of the line. Dan’s hand shook as he held the phone to his ear.
“I love you, Dan. I do. And I’m sorry.”
“Get home, Micky.” Dan trotted faster down the valley,
heading toward home, not bothering to go back for the jacket he’d left on the
pub chair. “Bring Flynn home. And we’ll talk it all out.” He practically ran
the rest of the way. “I love you, too.”

About the Author:
Brought
up in a relatively small town in Hertfordshire, C F White managed to do what
most other residents try to do and fail
—leave.
Studying
at a West London university, she realised there was a whole city out there
waiting to be discovered, so, much like Dick Whittington before her, she never
made it back home and still endlessly searches for the streets paved with gold,
slowly coming to the realisation they’re mostly paved with chewing gum. And the
odd bit of graffiti. And those little circles of yellow spray paint where the
council point out the pot holes to someone who is supposedly meant to fix them
instead of staring at them vacantly whilst holding a polystyrene cup of
watered-down coffee.
She
eventually moved West to East along that vast District Line and settled for pie
and mash, cockles and winkles and a bit of Knees Up Mother Brown to live in the
East End of London; securing a job and creating a life, a home and a family.
After
her second son was born with a rare disability, C F White’s life changed
drastically and brought her pen back to paper after she’d written stories as a
child but never had the confidence to show them to the world. Now, having
embarked on this writing journey, C F White cannot stop. So strap in, it’s
going to be a bumpy ride.

Menage in Paradise

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Eric Thomas is a drummer from the superstar rock band, The Harbingers. When he meets Olivia, he knows there’s something different about her. He wants her – and not just for the night.
But when the two Doms cause a stir with their antics on Pleasure Island as they each attempt to win Olivia, they will be forced to contemplate another means of attaining their prize. Can they convince Olivia to experience the fantasy of a ménage with them? And will what happens on Pleasure Island stay that way?
Publisher’s Note: While this steamy ménage is part of the bestselling Pleasure Island series, it can be read and enjoyed on its own.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now for an Excerpt:
What the hell had he just witnessed?
Ian’s stomach roiled as Olivia took his arm and helped him
off the bloody ship. There was no way he could ride that hell beast back to
Nassau when they were finished with their performance engagement.
No effin’ way. It would bloody kill him. Or at least, he’d
wish he was dead. Not only was the Dramamine he’d taken ineffective, but Ian
believed it had added to his seasickness. Hell wasn’t cold or hot, but the
seesaw rolling of the ocean and any ship that thought it could sail over its
incessant waves.
Damn.
“What was that all about?” Ian asked, enjoying the feel of
Olivia’s elegant hand as it gripped his arm. Concern creased her brow while she
steered him off the boat. If he weren’t feeling so ill from the crossing, he’d
erase her expression and replace it with something explicitly more carnal.
Olivia had fussed over him below decks until he’d sent her away. He was a
freaking Dom and rendered inert by the sea, completely bumbling his intentions
to seduce Olivia back into his bed.
“That was Eric, from The Harbingers. We met him at Declan
and Zoey’s wedding in Scotland. Remember?” she murmured and shot him an
innocuous glance.
“In all honesty, not really. There were quite a few people
there that weekend.” And when Ian thought of that wedding, recalled the events,
there was only one image that came to mind: Olivia, naked and writhing beneath
him in the wee hours after the wedding. They’d both had more to drink that
night than had been wise.
They’d ended up having drunken hot sex in his room.
Mind-blowing, ‘he could barely remember his name and wanted to have it again
and again’ sex. Olivia had been conspicuously absent from his bed the following
morning, leaving his room sometime while he’d slept off their amazing sex and
booze.
It was a night Ian had been hard pressed to forget.
In nearly a year since what he considered an event horizon,
neither of them had discussed it, nor had the good sense to do it again. More’s
the pity.

by Sylvia Ashby
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Family
is where life begins.
And
what better time to spend with your family than Christmas week?
Ashley
and Giacomo go to Upper Swainswick, a postcard village ten minutes’ drive from
Bath, to stay with Ashley’s mum and stepdad. It’s their last visit before the
arrival of their first child.
But
babies have a habit of being unpredictable.
So
when Ashley goes into labour on Christmas Eve, three weeks ahead of schedule,
it takes everyone by surprise.
She’s
not ready! Her perfect Birth Plan is packed away in her hospital bag two
hundred miles away, she has no going home outfit, and she has a live event
planned for New Year’s Eve for her YouTube channel, The Sinking Chef. People
have been signing up for it for weeks. She can’t possibly disappoint them on
the last day of the year. What is she to do?
The
tinsel gets even more tangled when Giacomo’s parents decide to fly from Italy
to meet their first grandchild. Hotels are fully booked, so everyone has to
stay under the same roof.
Would
eleven people in the house, not counting the baby, turn out to be simply too
much for Ashley?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now for An Excerpt:
We’re sitting around the low living room table about to
begin a game of Best of British.
‘Right,’ Mum says. ‘Does everyone have a drink?’
Orna, Clara and Vittorio are drinking Prosecco. I raise my
cup of tea. Thomas and Philip ignore her. They wanted to have the rest of the
Coca Cola in the fridge, but Mum put her foot down. Also, they think Best of
British is a dumb game. They wanted to play Cards Against Humanity, but Orna
vetoed them. And now they are in a funk.
‘The question that we’re asking today is what makes British
people so British?’ Orna reads aloud the back of the game box.
‘Let see,’ Mum opens the box and tips out the contents.
There is a board, which she unfolds. The playing pieces are different colours
and each of us has to choose one.
‘I’ll be blue,’ says Philip.
‘No, I’ll be blue!’ Thomas snatches the pieces before Philip
can get to it.
‘I said it first!’
‘You can have green!’
‘Muuum! Tell him,’ Philip shrieks.
‘Boys, if you don’t behave there will be no desserts at
dinner.’ Mum’s voice is assertive, but her eyes are pleading with them.
‘Tom always gets whatever he wants,’ Philip whines, but Mum
stares him down and he settles for green.
Mum throws a shaky smile at Orna, who returns the smile
without showing her teeth, then has the tiniest sip of Prosecco and rolls her
eyes.
My blood boils in indignation on Mum’s behalf. How dare she
treat Mum like that when she’s never had children. She has no idea what it’s
like. I open my mouth to say something, then close it. What’s the point? She’s
just a horrible woman. And I don’t want to spoil everybody else’s fun.
We each select a piece in silence and put them on the start
space on the board.
‘Right, I’ll read out the rules, shall I?’ Mum grips the
string of pearls hanging down her neck. She looks quite stressed. I wish she
wouldn’t mind Orna.
She carries on.
‘“The Question Master picks up the first Question Card from
the box,” I’ll be the Question Master,’ she says before Orna can jump in. ‘“The
Question Master picks up the first Question Card from the box, making sure the
answers are concealed from all the players on both teams. If it is a Picture
Card, the picture is shown to all the players on both teams. If it is a Themed
Card, the theme is read out to all the players on both teams. If a question is
answered incorrectly then the Question Master can put the same question to the
next player for a bonus move. If they answer correctly they move their own
piece onto the next space on the board that matches the colour of the
question.”’
Mum releases her string of pearls and makes them rattle.
‘Is everything clear?’ Mum looks around for a second time.
‘OK, then the youngest player goes first.’
Philip perks up. He picks up a card and hands it to her.
‘Who were Randolph, Diana, Sarah, Mary and Marigold?’ Mum
looks at the answer perplexed. ‘Oh. This is rather hard. Perhaps you can choose
another card, Phil. Something with a picture on it.’
‘This is not how you play a game!’ Orna pushes her ample
bosom forward. ‘Rules are rules. They are meant to be followed by everyone. How
will he learn to follow the rules if he’s always given leeway?’
‘He’s not always given leeway!’ Mum protests. ‘It’s just
that… this question is rather out of his “era”.’
‘What do you mean out of his “era”? Since when has knowledge
had an “era”? It’s not only current affairs that are important, you know?’ Orna
clicks her tongue.
‘I didn’t say that, but he can’t be expected to know
everything. He’s only twelve.’
‘Than you offer the question to the person who’s next in
turn! When that person answers, he’ll learn.’
Mum rolls her eyes but complies.
Next in turn is Thomas.
‘Thomas, who were Randolph, Diana, Sarah, Mary and
Marigold?’ Mum reads the question again.
‘I don’t know.’ Thomas grumbles. ‘This is a stupid game.
Cards Against Humanity is much better.’
‘Yes, but we’re not playing Cards Against Humanity,’ Mum
snaps at him. ‘We’re playing Best of British, OK?’
Her veneer is cracking. I see Philip throwing a warning
glance in his brother’s direction but Thomas ignores him.
Next in turn is Orna.
‘Orna, who were Randolph, Diana, Sarah, Mary and Marigold?’
Mum reads the question for the third time.
‘They are all character from Downton Abbey!’ Orna says
victoriously.
‘I’m afraid not, Orna.’ Mum’s mouth twitches. ‘They were
Churchill’s children.’
Thomas starts laughing and Mum shoots him a warning frown.
‘Oh,’ Orna’s face turns puce. ‘Very well, then. Carry on.’

Too True to be Good

Zach Bennett was content to go to work, hang out with his family and friends, and entertain a woman once in a while. As his family found love all around him, he was content to stay single. Unattached. Happy.
Besides, he had enough to worry about with a new chef breathing down his neck for his job.
She faced the truth every day…
Gianna Brooks always wanted to work with people. She saw enough growing up to know kids need all the help they can get. They deserved to be safe. Loved. Happy.
Which is why she’s determined to get her new client into a forever home.
But the truth isn’t always good…
The last thing Zach needs is a little girl showing up on his doorstep claiming she’s his. Her social worker hot on her heels, and demanding a place to stay, definitely doesn’t make it any better. Especially with Gianna’s curvy body and bedroom eyes, and his daughter’s sad sweetness, making him consider keeping both of them.
Gianna knows she should run. Zach knows he should send them away. But neither of them can resist the pull toward the other.

Now for an Excerpt:
“We baked cookies today. Want to try one?” Zach asked when
Gianna came in the door.
“You made these?” she asked, holding one up.
He nodded, draping an arm around Summer’s shoulders. “We
did. It was a lot of fun. Wasn’t it?”
Summer nodded, giggling.
Gianna’s eyes narrowed, zeroing in on Summer. “What’s so
funny?”
Summer shook her head, but she was still grinning.
“I think she ate too many cookies,” Zach said with a
straight face. “Sugar high.”
“How long ago did you make these?”
“A few hours ago. We wanted to make sure we saved some for
you. Try it.”
Zach waited, wondering if Gianna would take the bait. She
examined the cookie closely.
“Is that mint?”
Summer burst out laughing and clamped her hand over her
mouth. Zach nodded. “We wanted to make something different. It’s mint cream and
chocolate cookies. They’re pretty good. I think you’ll like it.”
Gianna shrugged, then popped the whole cookie in her mouth.
She chewed, her eyebrows tugging together and her head tilting to the side.
Then she rushed to the sink.
“Ack! What happened? Those are not very good. Aren’t you a
chef?”
Summer was doubled over laughing. She looked up at Gianna
and said, “Those were toothpaste cookies! We got you!”
Gianna’s eyes bugged out. She looked pissed. A slow smile
turned her lips up, and Zach knew he was in trouble.
“Oh, payback is going to be so much fun!”

About the Author:
Mary E.
Thompson grew up loving to read, like a good little girl. Many nights she would
fall asleep with the flashlight still turned on as she hid under the covers
trying to finish the last few pages of a book. As an adult, the light from her
ereader means she doesn't need a flashlight, but she still stays up way too
late to finish a book.
When Mary's not
reading, she's playing with her two kids or living out her own real life
romance novel with her hubby. She has a weakness for chocolate, especially when
it's paired with peanut butter, and has been known to have a bad day just
because there's no chocolate in the house. Unless there’s wine. Then everything
is okay.
Mary grew up in
Buffalo, New York and swears she's the only local to never ski or snowboard.
Soccer was always her sport, with a couple adventures white water rafting and
skydiving to keep things interesting. Mary moved to South Carolina for college
but missed Buffalo every day. Yeah, she thinks she's crazy, too. She somehow
convinced her South Carolina born and bred hubby to return to Buffalo to raise
their kids and live out their lives. He’s still not sure what he was thinking.
