Read an Excerpt from Mortuary School

A hot wind whipped my hair into my eyes, but even through the black veil I could see the Cavendish School of Mortuary Science wasn’t what I’d expected. The pictures of it on the website showed ivied halls on a grand Victorian-era estate.

The registration building in front of me wasn’t that. It was a three-story blue and beige stucco monstrosity, circa 1980.

I pushed open the heavy security-glass door and made my way toward the registrar’s office down a linoleum hallway that smelled of cafeteria lunches. The line wasn’t long, Mortuary Science not being as popular a major as, say, Communications or Business. I retrieved my registration packet and headed out into the blustery heat again.

Despite the Santa Ana winds, famous in Southern California for unseasonal temperatures and seasonal fires, the campus hummed with first-day excitement. Lost students wandered zombie- like along the winding paths. Returning students greeted one another with fist bumps and hugs. The crowd looked much like any other group of college students, albeit a greater percentage preferred dark hair and clothing, but they weren’t. They were here to study death.

Instead of world history, they would study world burial customs. Instead of Psychology 101, Psychology of Grief. Instead of Biology, a hands-on embalming course. Something warm glowed within. I was a good six years older than most of the students milling around, yet they were my people.

I pulled the campus map from the registration packet, and as I did, a glossy four-color flier fluttered to the ground. Before I could retrieve it, the wind snagged it and carried it toward the grass. I jogged after it, but a girl with skin as dark as mine was white darted forward and snatched it from the thieving gust. She glanced at the page in her hand and snorted. “I got one of these.”

So maybe he’s a tech millionaire. No one else needs to know. He’s finally found the balance his life needed—yet something is missing. When he meets Cerise, he discovers an attraction he isn’t expecting. Nor the connection he quickly develops with her foster son. Does he now have the lost piece to complete his puzzle?

Read an Excerpt

Brodie glanced at Cerise again as she gazed out the window at the passing scenery. Her disappointment about the outcome of the meeting was palpable and he wished he could do something to make it better.

His stomach dropped to his feet. Had he made it worse by suggesting they turn up at the meeting as a couple?

Yes, doofus, of course you made it worse.

He flexed his fingers around the steering wheel. “I’m sorry, Sparkles.”

“What?”

“I’m sorry that instead of making the adoption process better, I’ve made it more difficult for you. I should never have suggested we be a couple for Finn’s adoption. I should’ve let you go alone.”

Her sigh sounded around the cab of his truck, making him feel like a class a jerk. “It’s not your fault. I was mad and disappointed at first, but Elena is right. Perhaps it is best if I do take a step back and think things through properly.”

Dread balled in his stomach. She wasn’t about to take a step back from him, was she?

Excerpt:

She shot him a brief glare before concentrating on her plate. “As I suspected, the Gunns have left you alone with me.”

“Did they? Whatever for?” Laurel and Ben could not have guessed his attraction to this vulnerable beauty. Could they?

“So you could begin your interrogation of me regarding Cornelius Turner’s death.” She tilted her head.

He scanned her evaluating her. “I doubt you had anything to do with Mr. Turner’s murder.”

She leaned forward, “So foul play is suspected.”

“I’m afraid so. What can you tell me about that night?” Raven couldn’t help but wonder how this tiny breath of a woman was wrapped up in Alchemia’s gruesome murder.

“I can’t recollect much from the night of Mr. Turner’s murder. I’ve tried but every time I search my memory, my throat locks up, and I feel my limbs numb and my brain becomes foggy. It sounds strange, I know. Doctor Gunn says my symptoms are similar to shell shock.”

“I’m aware of the disorder.” His mind burned with the memory of his own experience.

“I’m sorry I can’t be of more help. Cornelius was a wonderful man and very kind to me and my birds.”

“Tell me about him.” Her voice soothed him, despite the fact he found birds as exciting as watching a clock tick.

“Cornelius was my first canary courier. The couriers run the birds to and from the mines. They also have to sit with the fledglings so the birds become used to them. Cornelius even went so far as to watch the hatchlings. He was a surrogate to many of the colored canaries.”

“Was he collecting birds from you that night?”

“No. I went to town.”

“To meet him?” Raven wondered if more passed between Abigail and Cornelius.

“No to meet with…” Abigail began to rub her temples. “I’m sorry I don’t remember.”

Book Blast ~ Without a Head - A Dying to Be Beautiful Mystery by M. Glenda Rosen

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. M. Glenda Rosen will be awarding a $30 Amazon/BN gift card to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Jenna Preston is used to investigating cheating spouses, fraud, and even a murder or two in her role as a private investigator. But she’s never consulted on a case quite like the one at Darcy’s Salon in East Hampton. A killer has struck and left behind a woman’s head in the upscale salon’s shampoo sink.

As Jenna struggles to make sense of the what’s happened, she comes up against entitled and badly behaved beach dwellers, greedy parties with motives all their own, and the billion dollar beauty industry. With her loyal dog Watson at her side, Jenna pieces together clues and tracks down a killer who claims victims that are dying to be beautiful.

Read an Excerpt

This was not the first time the salon would find itself in the news. Almost ten years ago, another summer, a different disaster. Jenna remembered it well. She had been an investigative reporter at the time for the local daily paper. With its senior editor, she had worked the story for weeks.

The headline read: “Salon Stylist Arrested For Child Endangerment.”

“Fifty-four year old Zachary Kline, hair stylist at Darcy’s Salon in The Hamptons, was arrested after police found dozens of photos of underage children at his home and on his computers. He is alleged to have made arrangements for many of them to have sex with older men, several accused of indecency with minors. His checking account showed huge deposits from an undisclosed source. A serious criminal offense, he is facing felony charges that could get him a long jail sentence.

“The salon’s owner, Darcy Monroe, had no comment. The local police have said it’s an active investigation and can’t provide any more details at this time. It is known that one of the children, a young boy, told his parent what happened, which is what put this investigation into motion.”

“We did a number of in-depth stories including background pieces on the subject of child endangerment. Plus I interviewed Kline, but he refused to say who his clients were, which is why he ultimately got a ten-year sentence after being found guilty. Only thing that saved him from more years were a few locals saying positive things about him. The story of the case went on for several weeks. All of us reporters were nagging you for comments or information you might have on this Kline guy.”

“My attorney told me to keep saying, ‘No comment.’ Eventually, it all died down in the media, but it cost me a summer of headaches and maybe a dozen customers leaving my shop.”

“I know, Darcy, and now this!”

“Jenna, I need your help. The body has to be found before the salon has another full-blown disaster hanging over its business in the middle of ‘the season’.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Hello, I’m Shari. By day, I crawl out of bed, mainline coffee, walk the dog, get my kid to class, and save cities within the four walls of my office. Usually by email.

At night, the other Shari emerges. With a glass of wine by side, I curl up on the couch with my computer nestled in my lap and let my imagination play until stories take shape. I also periodically check on my teen-ager, hiding out in the bedroom. Once I’ve reassured myself she’s not plotting world domination, I pull out my alter ego, who definitely is. As my alter ego, I save cities in a cape and spangled tights, wander space and time on a surfboard, fly over the Himalayas on feathered wings, make six-toed footprints in indigo talc snow on the sixth planet in the Andromeda galaxy or eavesdrop on Olympian gods while pretending to whip up a bowl of ambrosia.

In all these wondrous worlds, romance and passion blossom. I can't resist a happy ending. And I am particularly prone to writing happy endings for those who have given up on ever getting one.

Teaser Excerpt (PG)

“I’ll take you there,” Marisol volunteered. “Follow me.” She rushed out of the room. He was by her side in seconds.

“Explain your interest in me.” He turned off his scent sensors to prevent himself from being sucked into the pungent turbulence of emotions spilling out in her aroma.

“We were to be married.” The gentle emotion vibrating in her voice stroked his remaining flesh like a caress. He shook it off. It was dangerous.

“Was it arranged?”

“No, we chose each other. We were living together when you were killed—abducted—after a mining accident.”

“We were intimate?” Heat roared through him. He shut it down reluctantly. He was starting to like the way he felt around her.

“You have no memories of me? Of us?” She blinked rapidly as though to force back tears threatening to spill.

He shook his head. “Cybercorp wipes our long-term memories. Periodically, a memory fragment may surface, but our systems are programmed to shut down if that occurs. If a cyborg suffers from too many of these recalls, he is decommissioned.”

“That’s brutal.”

“We’re brutal. You’d be wise to remember that.”
