She reached out to brush a small leaf from his hair, her hand brushing the side of his face. “C’mon,” she said as she pulled him toward a bench. Once they were seated, she looked him in the eye. “Yeah, this morning threw me for a loop, but frankly, that’s just the tip of the iceberg as to how fucked up I am. All my ‘I’m fine’ comments aside, I know I’m a mess. I already told you, I don’t date anymore. I’m no good at relationships and I’m okay with that. I don’t want to lead you on or anything.”


He grinned. “Would I like to ask you out? Hell, yes. But I realize we’re on a mini vacation, in an odd situation, and you live half a world away. Besides, there’s obviously a lot about you I don’t know.” He touched her face. “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t interested in seeing where things could go.”

Kat tried to ignore her body’s response to his touch. “And what if it doesn’t go anywhere?”

“Then no harm, no foul.”

That sounded too relaxed. “You’re not going to push?”

“I won’t push. But you can’t blame a guy for wanting to.”

“Okay. Just as long as we understand each other.”

Footsteps approached, and she paid attention, honing her hearing, listening closely. In seconds, she knew Jackson wasn't alone. He'd brought others with him. Two masculine voices and a soft feminine laugh hit her ears. She used her nose, discovering four unique scents. She identified Wade's immediately, placing the Alpha she'd met on two occasions. The identities of the other guests were a mystery. She went still when one scent tickled her nostrils, equal parts earthy and masculine, and her wolf stirred.

She tried to disregard the reaction, pushing the beast back, getting her head on straight. She listened to their shuffling to gauge how close they were to her.

Then something strange happened.

Everyone stopped at the entranceway except for one individual. The male with the appealing scent strode into the room. He came closer, his tempting fragrance growing stronger. He stopped right in front of her. Knowing her misty eyes and vacant stare could unnerve others and looked wrong, she kept her head down.

"Hello, Luna," he said softly. "I'm sorry I'm late."

Her breath caught, and she froze.

She knew that voice. "Am I dreaming?"

"No, lovely. It's not a dream. This is very real."

In front of her stood Björn. Ylva kept her sword up for longer than necessary, then lowered it and smiled back despite herself. She had forgotten how much his physical presence affected her. The way he looked at her with a mixture of desire and laughter had always appealed. She sheathed her sword, and he took a step towards her. She breathed in, the familiar scent of his leather armour and the man inside sending her senses reeling as it always did. 

“Miss me?” he asked.

“No,” she lied. “Why? Did you miss me? Is that why you came looking for me?” She mustn’t let him know that she had thought of him almost every waking minute - especially over the past few weeks. She wondered if he had another woman here, although the fact that he had purposefully sought her out would seem to suggest that he didn’t. 

“You didn’t arrive with the others off the ship, and yet Elisedd told me you were anxious to see me.” 

“Did he now?” 

“I thought you’d be in more of a hurry to see me.” 

“You thought it was me who was in a hurry to see you?” Ylva’s gaze slid lower to where the bulge in his breeks suggested that it was his own lust that made him anxious to see her. 

“The nights here have been cold and empty.” Björn took a step towards her, drew her towards him, and lowered his mouth. He paused, his lips almost, but not quite, touching hers, and she knew he was waiting for her to kiss him. She slid her sword back into its scabbard and waited. What if he was able to tell?

About the Author:

Mairibeth MacMillan lives on the shores of Loch Long on the edge of Argyll and Bute. While very picturesque, living there seems to involve endless driving and family life currently involves running a taxi service.

She was a drama teacher for many years until, during a career break, she studied for a Creative Writing degree through the Open University followed by a Masters degree in Playwriting and Dramaturgy. Over the years she has had some success with short stories and flash fictions in various competitions, magazines and anthologies. In 2014 she was shortlisted for the New Writer’s Award at the Festival of Romance.

Inspired by the discovery of a Viking fort marked on the Ordnance Survey map nearby, she started working on a series of Viking Romances set in the Kingdom of Strathclyde at the end of the Ninth century. Camille rolled her eyes, ignoring his comment and the ribbon of desire that curled in her stomach.

The look was adorable, and Seung-ju wanted nothing more than to bend down and kiss her mouth into a smile. She looked stunning this evening. The alpha in him wanted to throw a floor-length coat over her and cover her up from everyone’s view. Upon closer inspection, he discovered that what he once thought was a simple updo, contained gold-cultured pearls woven into the tightly coiled coif. The updo displayed the graceful slope of her neck. His fingers itched to trail its contour. 

“Why were you stalking me earlier?” she asked, cutting a piece of the steak and bringing it to her mouth.

“I was blown away by your beauty,” he said, his voice lowering.

“You’ve been drinking, haven’t you?” 

“I don’t need alcohol to help me see what’s right in front of my face.”

“And what’s that?”

“You. My beautiful wife. In that dress.” 

“Seung-ju.” She slapped his arm and reached for her glass of wine, but not before he caught the sight of a deep blush tinging her cheeks. “Whatever,” she said after a moment. “You practically marked me with that intense glare.”

“I can think of other, more satisfying ways of marking you.”

“Shhh,” she said with a smile. “You’re lucky I don’t have one on me after last night.”

“Be careful of what you say,” he warned. “I just might finish the deed tonight.”

Marissa remained alone, a captive in the tipi. As the hours passed, her uncertainty grew. Darkness was claiming the land when she decided to try to escape. Quietly leaving the tipi, Marissa didn’t get far when Laughing Woman confronted her.

“Go back!” she commanded in the Comanche tongue, pointing toward Wind Ryder’s tipi. Her husband had directed that the captive was to stay there until Wind Ryder returned from his raid.

Marissa’s hope of escape was ruined. She went back into the lodge, wondering if she would ever be able to save herself. As she stepped inside, she gasped in shock. There was another woman in the tipi. She was hunched down and visibly shaking, a shawl covering her head.

“Who are you?” Marissa demanded, frightened.

At the sound of her voice, the woman went completely still. Slowly, she lifted her head to stare at the woman before her.

“Who are you?” Crazy One asked in English.

“You speak English?” Marissa was stunned.

“You speak English?” Crazy One repeated, peering up at her. “Why are you in Wind Ryder’s Lodge? It is not good to be here! I must leave—before he returns.” She stood, ready to flee, her expression one of panic and fear.

“Who are you?” Marissa demanded again, shocked as she realized the woman was white.

“They call me Crazy One.”

“I’m Marissa.”

“No, you are Shining Spirit. Chief Ten Crow said so.”

“No, I’m Marissa Williams and I was taken captive—”

“Doesn’t matter,” she cut Marissa off as she looked nervously toward the doorway. “Wind Ryder may be coming.”

“Who is Wind Ryder? Why are you so afraid of him?”

“You will see,” Crazy One answered slowly. “He is a fierce warrior—an angry warrior. I must go.”

She fled the tipi.

Marissa watched Crazy One run off, then looked around to realize the other villagers were watching her. Her emotions in turmoil, she sank down on the blankets, wondering in fear who the warrior named Wind Ryder was.

“What are you staring at?”

Trayon pointed at my legs. “Do not move!”

I looked down and gasped. I knew I had picked up some hitchhikers, but wow. There was a brown snake with a crocodile's head and bright blue eyes coiled around my left thigh. A baby dinosaur chewed on my right pants leg. “Merda!”

Pepe cautiously sniffed them. “Me like.”

I guess that was a good thing. I had to admit the little dinosaur was cute as a bug.

The Askole drew an enormous sword. “I will kill the vermin.”

“What? Stop!” I threw my hands out. “We don’t kill babies.”

“It is a Rodan. None can be allowed to live.”

“It’s a baby.” I stiffened as something moved in my hair. Had I picked up an alien version of lice too?

“Our law is quite specific. All must be destroyed.” Trayon advanced toward me.

The Rodan whimpered and tightened its grip on my leg.

Pepe growled menacingly. “No hurt.”

I pulled my laser pistol. “You harm one scale on that kid’s head, and I’ll shoot you.”

“The Rodan have your brother.”

“So, you think this baby is the mastermind behind his kidnapping?”

Trayon’s tentacles knotted. “I am your mate, and you will obey me. Lower your weapon.”

“I guess you haven’t heard, but Earth women aren’t good at following orders and I’m not your mate.”

Trayon tapped his gauntlet. “Your weapons have been disabled.”

I pulled the trigger. Nothing happened. Cazzo! There was no way I could take Trayon in hand-to-hand combat.

About the Author: I was a 9-1-1 dispatcher for the Glendale Police Department and to keep from going totally bonkers – I mean people have no idea of what a real emergency is. Take this for an example: I answered, “9-1-1 emergency, what’s your emergency?” And this hysterical woman yelled, “My bird is in a tree.” Sometimes I really couldn’t help myself, so I said, “Birds have a tendency to do that, ma’am.” The woman screeched, “No! You don’t understand. My pet parakeet is in the tree. I’ve just got to get him down.” Like I said, not a clue. “I’m sorry ma’am, but we don’t get birds out of trees.” The woman then cried, “But… What about my husband? He’s up there, too.” See what I had to deal with? To keep from hitting myself repeatedly in the head with my phone, I took up writing.

Three weeks went by before Nicole Marcel and Mimi became full-time co-anchors on the TONIGHT TV interview show. They waited to take up their duties until the trial of Stephan Ledax was over.

Nicole testified before the court, as did Rene Couteau, to the attempted rape in the changing room of the studio. The verdict was unanimous: guilty of sexual assault.

During the course of the proceedings, there was testimony from six other women, relating to the pattern of behavior Stephan Ledax evinced over the period of several years - involving a variety of predatory acts – some even cruel: abandonment, abortion, lack of child support.

Stephan Ledax was sentenced to eight years behind bars. As he was led away by a policewoman, his face was distorted and wet with tears.

 Grandma Tress was right. He had nowhere to go Christmas Eve, or Christmas Day, either. He’d already mailed gifts to his parents, and he had no other close relatives in town. Cooper scraped a hand down his face. He’d lived under a dark cloud for too long. Perhaps he should be thankful Mrs. Henry had spotted his exhausting depression.

 To top it all, Roz was back. She hadn’t seen her grandparents for five years. Enough time for him to put her out of his mind and marry. Enough time for him to start a new life, only to lose it just as fast.

 His jaw tightened. He’d loved her once, but she’d left him for college and the bright lights of New York and then Chicago. He’d kept up with her career for a while. Mrs. Henry saw to that until he married. Then she’d backed off. He always felt the older woman understood why he finally married. After all, he was a plumber, not the kind of guy a college-educated woman with a fancy job would want.

 She looked the same. Tall, unlike Brittany whose head hadn’t even cleared his shoulder, and thin with dark brown hair tumbling like a heavy mane, dark eyes, and very kissable lips. At least they had been. But he’d noticed the dark circles and worry lining Roz’s eyes. There was an air of defeat about her as if she’d lost something too. He recognized it easily. After all, he was the poster boy of loss.

 Unless he got an emergency call, he had no jobs before Christmas. Going to pick out a Christmas tree wasn’t a big deal except he was going with Roz. Cooper backed out of his garage and moved his truck into the Henry’s driveway. He climbed out, drawing a deep breath, and strolled up to his neighbor’s front door. Might as act as if he wasn’t nervous.

He clawed his fingers through his hair, then knocked.

“Before we join hands and start singing kumbaya, why don’t you tell me why you dragged me down here?”

“I have to admit, I was curious.”

“As I said, we find ourselves on the same side of this problem, but for different reasons. I was thinking there might be some way we could work together.”

“Greeting,” the old woman called out to them standing just to the side of the road. She wore a man’s military jacket over an old torn pink satin cocktail dress. “Lord, have mercy, you all caught a load of fish!”
