Between Us by Wendi Zwaduk

in the Boots and Chaps and Cowboy Hats Anthology
Contemporary

Short Story
from Totally Bound

Sometimes coming home is the best way to heal a broken heart—especially with two ranch hands involved.
Channon Kennedy planned to come home, but she never expected to find herself in the arms of the two men she’s fantasized over since high school. Back then, Shaun and Brian didn’t seem interested. Now, she’s older, wiser and has nothing to lose. If the men of her dreams want her, who is she to resist?
Shaun Maple and Brian Powell have done everything together—work at the farm, live together and love the same woman. They’ve wanted Channon since they first laid eyes on her, but circumstances beyond their control kept the threesome apart. Times have changed and so have Shaun and Brian. They’re not taking no for an answer—they want her between them for good. Can the ranch hands convince her she’s the only woman for them or will the relationship implode before it gets a chance to grow?

 “Where are a couple of farm boys when I need them?” Channon Kennedy brushed her horse, Peaches, and rested her head on the side of the large animal’s neck. She liked being around the horses. She could talk to them and not have to worry about someone arguing with her. She’d done enough arguing in the last year for a lifetime.
“I don’t know how I’m going to manage,” she said. She stopped brushing the horse and looked Peaches in the eye. “I’m one person with three horses and a hundred acres. That’s a lot for one person to keep things going.”
The horse snorted, then shook her head.
“I get it. We’ll figure it out.” She sighed and surveyed the stall. According to her father’s notes, there were two farm hands living on the property. She hadn’t seen anyone, but the state of the stall said otherwise. Someone had cleaned it out recently. She’d need to shovel out the muck and add fresh straw, but it could’ve been worse.
Not knowing who lived on the farm was her own fault. She’d been at the house for three days, but had only ventured out during the last hour. Between the guilt over not being home when her father died and mourning the loss of him, she hadn’t wanted to be out in public. She grieved for the end of her relationship with her former boyfriend, Jack, too. The bastard had cheated on her and dumped her for a younger woman. She shouldn’t have been so upset. Getting rid of him should’ve been a relief, but it wasn’t. Seven years was a long time to be with someone, only to be shafted.
Channon climbed the side of the stall and sat on the wooden planks. She leaned against the divider bars between the stables. “I miss the boys the most.” She gripped the shelf along the wall. “I could use their help, yeah, but I miss their friendship. Brian and Shaun were here when no one else cared.”
Peaches shifted around and bumped her head against Channon’s side. Channon hugged the horse. “I miss them. I shouldn’t because we’re horrible when we’re together. I still remember all the times we got into trouble, but it was fun.”

Novella (85 pages)

Taking a pause just might be the cure for his broken heart.
Denver Chalmers thought his world completely collapsed when his twin brother, Deiken, committed suicide. Will a chance meeting at the cemetery be the first step toward his salvation?
Jett Dawson shared Denver's view of the world. Deiken had been his everything, but their seemingly perfect relationship hid a multitude of problems. Jett won't forget about his past, but he's ready to move forward. He's always had a crush on Denver and although he's been told its wrong, he wants Denver in his life on a romantic level. Will their common ground and mutual desire lead to disaster or something they both need?

Footsteps crunched on the dry grass. He glanced over his shoulder. He wasn't sure why, but he'd expected to see his ex-boyfriend Mike. Maybe they weren't good together, but Mike had a way of knowing when Denver was low. He focused on the person walking up to him.
This wasn't Mike.
Recognition swept over him. He knew the man. Jett Dawson, Deiken's partner.
Oh shit. The last time he'd spoken to Jett, they'd argued. Jett screamed at him and he'd called Jett an asshole. Back then, he hadn't known the score and blamed Jett for his brother's passing. Now he knew better.
The guilt came rushing back to Denver. He wasn't sure what to say to his twin's partner.
"Denver." Jett stopped beside him.
"Jett." He wanted to be cool and not lose his temper. Deiken's actions were his own--not Jett's fault. Besides, Denver had blown his chances at conversation in the past. How did he know now would be different?
"I miss him," Jett said. He stuffed his hands into his board short's pockets. "It's not the same at the plant without him."
"I bet." He turned his attention to Jett, but didn't really see him.
"I come here a lot. I must miss you, since this is the first time I've run into you in six months." Jett sighed, then faced away from the grave. "Can--can we talk? Not exchange pleasantries, but really talk? Not here."
Denver paused. This could end up therapeutic or really bad. They tended to argue, not talk. But still. If Jett needed someone, he'd try to be there. "I've got coffee at the house and it's quiet. Or lemonade." He'd always been attracted to Jett, but never said anything because of Deiken. Jett wanted his brother, not him. Then Deiken passed and the argument happened. He doubted once he and Jett talked that Jett would have much to do with him, but he'd give the conversation a shot.
"Coffee or lemonade sounds good." Jett rocked on his feet. "Really good."
"Want a minute alone with Deik? I can head to the farm and start the coffee." Truth be told, he simply needed some separation from his brother's partner.
"I'm good. I've talked to him so many times. Not just here. We talk at the office, the apartment and when I run." Jett chuckled. "I bet he's tired of hearing from me."
"Nah. He loved you." Denver knew that down to his soul. Deiken always discussed Jett and their life together. "You were his world."

"Sometimes things aren't what they seem." Jett started away from Denver, then paused. "Let's go to the farm. I know the way."

“I never got a chance to give you his rundown.” Alec grinned. “Since the waiting room is empty, I’ll just tell you now. No worms, no fleas, but I’d give him a bath. The weight loss helped but I’d also suggest getting Dragon on a tooth brushing regimen. He’s been eating things he probably shouldn’t that did a number on his gums. I ran a heartworm test which was negative and I’ve given him a pill for this month. When you come in next we’ll set you up right. Call, okay?” He winked and walked back into the closest exam room.
We’ll set me up? Call? He wanted me to call him? I hadn’t heard those terms in such a long time. Maybe my assumption more than fifteen years before had been more on the money than I thought. I shrugged him off back then. I could be over-thinking. Again.
I looked down at Dragon, who was sprawled on his side on the floor.  He gazed up at me with his droopy eyes and his tongue sticking out of his mouth. At least I had him back. What I’d do about my overzealous crush on the vet and his advances, well I hadn’t figured that out yet. I stress yet

Beautiful Music Together by @MeganSlayer #gayromance #gay #erotic #romance #musician #NSFWexcerpt #NSFW

Beautiful Music Together

Megan Slayer
From MLR Press
Contemporary, M/M, Anal Sex
Novella
Artwork by Kris Jacen

Can these two opposites find the right rhythm?

Jon Kagan likes his life. He's carefree unless he's in the recording studio with his trumpet. Then he's serious as hell. He plays the field like he does the notes on each track, but the single life isn't fun any longer. He wants a lover and partner. But how can he find the man of his dreams when the only people he spends time with are the same musicians night after night? He's convinced he won't--until he meets Benny. Then all bets are off.

Benny Walters burns the midnight oil, too, but not in the music business. He'd rather work on houses than play tunes. Putting in a good sweat over a flooring job or painting a room makes him happy--almost as much as watching the hot guy who jogs across the neighborhood in the middle of the day. When he finally talks to Jon, sparks fly. He'd love to get to know Jon better, but confidence isn't his strong point. Will he be able to get beyond his past and find the future he deserves?

Love happens in the strangest places, especially when it hits all the right notes.

Now for an EXCERPT:

"Are you painting the outside of the house? You mentioned something about gray." Jon didn't want to end the conversation. He'd grown fond of Benny, even after a few minutes of chatting.

"Oh, no. My friend is having new siding put on, but I'm not doing it. No, I posed the question in front of your friend there, because you looked like you'd rather eat scorpions than talk to him."

He laughed again and rocked on his feet. He liked the way Benny talked. "I'm glad you did." And even gladder he got the chance to meet Benny.

"I should get back to the shingles. It's hot and not all that sexy, but it pays the bills."

"I'm sure it does." Jon glanced over at the house, then met Benny's gaze. "If I'm ever in the mood to redo my house, can I call you?" Christ, his hands shook. He hadn't been this nervous in ages. Because of Benny?

"Sure. I don't have business cards or anything, but I'm licensed and bonded."

"I didn't doubt it." He slid his phone from the holder around his forearm. "Give me your number and I'll add you."

"555-6620."

"Ask for Benny?" Jon smiled. He could've sworn the afternoon heat increased a few degrees each time he looked into Benny's eyes.

"It's my personal number. No assistants or anything. I'm not that big." He blushed. "So you'll have to talk to me."

"There's nothing wrong with that." He inputted the info, then tucked the phone back into the holder. "I'll let you shingle. It was nice to meet you. Feel free to rescue me again."

"I'll see what I can do." Benny grinned and hefted a pack of shingles onto his shoulder. He climbed the ladder up to the porch roof and flexed as he put the shingles down.

Jon whimpered. Benny could really haul. "Do you run?"

Benny stepped to the edge of the roof and rested his hands on his hips. "What?"

"Do you run? Exercise?"

"I lift weights. Why?"

"I thought maybe you'd like to go for a run with me sometime." Holy fuck, he'd just kind of asked Benny out. Hell yeah.

"You always run in the afternoon. I'm a morning guy."

"Oh." Jon paused. Benny was supposed to agree to join him. That's what the other guys did... Well, shit. Jon twiddled with his headphones. "Wait, how'd you know about my run times?"

"You go past here nearly every day and have since the first of June. You're hard to miss."

"Is that a good thing?" Or bad? He hoped for the former.

"I'm just observant."

And noncommittal with his answers. Damn it. "Okay, well, I'll see you around. Maybe tomorrow when I run past here."

"Same time, same channel," Benny said. He waved and returned to the shingles.

What an odd guy, but handsome as hell and intriguing, too.

Jon headed home, but his thoughts never left Benny. The man knew the right moment to step in, which was kind of nice, and not Jon's regular type. He liked pretty boys. Musicians or vocalists. He snorted and stopped in his driveway. He had no idea if Benny was even gay, much less if he was interested. The answer to his run question had been vague. Probably because Benny wasn't homosexual.

He strode up the drive to the front porch and into his house, and kicked off his running shoes. He downed a bottle of water in what seemed like a single gulp. Trust him to find the one guy who wasn't interested, and find him attractive.

He had to be out of his mind, but he wanted to go back. Wanted to talk to Benny and get to know him better.

He did have Benny's number. What could he break in order to get the handsome home remodeler to come over?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And now for an excerpt:
My voice is hoarse at this point from screaming. My heart feels numb staring at my dead little brother. But there’s a deafening bang in the other direction. I run toward the sound and come across King Zeus fighting against Kadeem, Platinum bob, and me. What in Sonar’s going on here! How can I see my own self? It’s bizarre, but I watch my other self in action. Platinum bob delivers pain to Kadeem and me. Kadeem tries to resist and my other self-drops to one knee but manages to throw a force field over them. Kadeem begins brawling with both of them. My other self-rises to my feet, pulling a laser gun out of my boot. I’m about to shoot King Zeus, when another male Polar somehow intercedes my force shield. Then he grabs me by the neck and throws me down. Platinum bob hurls pain at Kadeem. His blood vessels are pulsating from his neck. The male Polar must be blocking my power because I watch helpless, unable to access them. Zeus has a small blade in his hand. He strolls over to Kadeem, who is on his knees, and plants the blade swiftly into his heart. Kadeem gasps, taking sharp breaths, trying to take the blade out. The knife is in too deep and has done too much damage. The golden glow around his honey irises diminishes and he falls over. My other self cannot defeat the male Polar’s shield block, so I’m on the ground in agony, struggling against platinum bob’s grasp.
I am in excruciating turmoil after witnessing Kadeem’s death. My surroundings begin to spin and everything disappears.
It's am excerpt tour and there are prizes. What book? Fairly Certain by Deborah Ann Davis! What can you win? Deborah will be awarding a $25 Amazon or B/N GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. How cool is that? You'll want to follow the tour for more chances to win. Where can you do that? Right here:
Petir takes a rough tumble in the Connecticut woods, but awakens in the middle of old England. His instinct to freak out is tempered by the arrival of a fair maiden wearing a bow...and arrow. Throwing caution to the wind, Petir decides he has nothing to lose by pursuing Maid Rianne. But when she is captured by the enemy, a geek with no ability to defend himself must find a way to rescue the fair maiden.
And now for an exclusive excerpt:
Trio’s soft growl interrupted Will. The small dog stood at attention, his entire body quivering and
alert, the intensity of his growls increasing. Will signaled the other children. Immediately the foragers melted into the nearest bush. To any casual observer, the snarling dog was by himself.
Will unsuccessfully scoured the woods for the source of Trio’s warning. The sheriff’s men had never gotten close to the camp before. Had he allowed the foraging party to drift too far from camp? He had to find a way to protect them.
Dale could lead the others to safety is Will could lure away the threat. He verified the others were well hidden, and made his decision.
Suddenly, he understood his mother’s sacrifice. She had protected his little brother as well as the entire camp by allowing herself to be taken. All this time he had been so angry with her decision to reveal herself instead of remaining concealed. Her choice was not one of bad judgment. Clearly there had been no choice at all.
Just as he had no choice now. He had to draw the threat away from his young friends.
I understand how brave you were, Mother. I shall make you proud.
Heart thudding, he selected a bush set away from his fellow foragers and darted for it. There was no turning back now. He prepared to dash to another shrub, but froze. Over Trio’s growling, he could hear running footfalls from behind the hill. It was too late.
About the Author:
I’m DEBORAH ANN DAVIS, and I write Quirky New/Young Adult Fiction with a Twist. I began
writing when searching for inspiration for my 5th grade English Journal. Lo and behold, my world was full of funny tales just waiting to be told. It never occurred to me to pursue writing, not even when I discovered my flare for telling stories at college parties.
After a string of undergrad majors, I realized I could reach a captive audience EVERY DAY in the public school system. As you probably know, teenagers love to laugh, and what could be more entertaining than Biology, Earth Science, and Environmental Science? I jumped into teaching with both feet and loved it for 27 years. It came with an added bonus: Once teens know you like to laugh, they want to make you laugh. Go figure.
Twelve years after our first kiss, I reunited with, and married my childhood sweetheart. Together we coached our daughter's AAU Basketball Team, which swept States two years in a row. (Yay!) Then, for several years, our daughter and our money went to college.
During a particularly nasty bout of Lyme disease, I turned to Fitness to boost my Health, and to Writing to boost my Happiness. Currently, I am a healthy and happy Educational Speaker and a Certified Personal Trainer who loves to write.
We presently reside on a lovely lake in Connecticut. When I’m not writing novels for my Love of Fairs series, I enjoy dabbling with living a sustainable life, dancing, playing outside, and laughing really hard every day. Cranberries and Spice Blog Hop is Here!
It's a hop and so much fun. 'Tis the season of thanks and giving thanks. I'm thankful I have two pen names--Wendi Zwaduk and Megan Slayer. That means I can write whatever the muse insists. Until this year, I hadn't been able to write a Thanksgiving story. I'm not sure why other than I never put my mind to it. As Megan Slayer, I've written a story about a character who hated the Thanksgiving holiday. He's got a pretty good reason, but can his partner turn his negative thoughts into positives?
Read on, but first, there's a contest. :-) You can win a prize pack, featuring a bracelet/earring set made by me, as well as signed swag and other goodies. Want to win it? Well all you have to do is comment on the post with what you're thankful for, your name and your email. You've got to leave all three because if I can't get in touch with you, I can't let you know if you won. Have fun and on with the excerpt!
Harvest Moon by Megan Slayer
Moon Series, book 2
Also part of the Bleh! Turkey! Series
MLR Press
Contemporary, Paranormal, Holiday
Short Story
M/M, Anal Sex
What's a guy to do when the time to be with family is the time he dreads the most?
All Matt Green wants for Thanksgiving is to propose to his boyfriend in the most epic way he knows-in front of their families. There's only one catch. His boyfriend, Reed Jordan, doesn't do family gatherings. To be honest, Reed isn't wild about Thanksgiving, but he won't say why.
Matt's willing to do anything in order to get Reed to talk, but will it make the holiday perfect or or ruin all of Matt's plans? The Harvest Moon just might be the right omen to make everything all right.
Reed stood at the counter. He’d told his boyfriend he’d be home at three. The way things were looking, he’d be more than an hour late. Damn it.
Beside him, his co-worker, Jagger, rang up a female customer with a little girl. The woman had bought a couple of Thanksgiving books. The brightly colored turkey and leaves on the top book caught Reed’s attention.
Thanksgiving. He didn’t mind giving thanks for the good things in his life. He also didn’t mind the food. What he hated were the gatherings. He wished the need to bring family to one house was not the rule. Maybe he was losing his mind, but he hated the togetherness. He’d been able to dodge the holiday for the last ten years, but since he’d met Matt, he knew he wasn’t going to get around the festivities for much longer. Matt liked family functions and preferred big parties. Reed wasn’t even sure a big family party was possible.
He finished typing out a reply email to the customer in search of an out-of-print book. Thankfully, the store had the book. He sent the customer the expected price and shipping options. He glanced at his watch once more. Less than two days until Thanksgiving. The store would be open on Wednesday, but he wasn’t working. If the customer needed the book, he could wait until Friday.
The last time he and Matt had talked about the holiday, Matt’s sister, Emily and her boyfriend were supposed to be spending the day with them. He could handle that. He liked Matt’s sister and loved her son, Nattie. Still, he wanted a small dinner, not a gigantic situation. He sighed. At least with Em and Matt, he wasn’t going to have to deal with accusations.
“I’m off until Friday morning,” Reed said to Jagger. “If there is a crisis, call me, but try not to have a crisis.”
“That’s the plan.” Jagger grinned. “You can trust us. We won’t let you down. Now go, so Matt doesn’t think you got lost.”
“Deal.”
Desperately Seeking an Alpha with Graig Case from Drawn Together (PG RATED EXCERPT)
Follow the Rest of the Hop here!
I thought I'd feature my hero from Drawn Together for my portion of the hop. A hero who takes charge is really hot and Graig is a hottie.
Here's my favorite moment from Drawn Together:
Graig, dressed in jogging pants and a tight T-shirt, stood in the doorway and grinned. “Dropped my gear in the hallway. Darned balls like to roll all over.” His shoulders slumped. “You know what? I’m not going to dance around this. I’m tired of games.” He crossed the room in five large strides. “Tessa, I love you. You might not care about me, but I’m crazy in love with you.” He cupped her face in both hands. “I’m the bastard son of a married man and his secretary. He lied to her, told her he’d marry her then stopped seeing her altogether when I was six. She married another guy who tried to be my dad. I knew better and knowing I didn’t belong to Gerald really fucked with my head. I didn’t know where I belonged. I decided I wasn’t going to put myself in her position. I’d get a good job and have a stable life with a wife and kids I loved. Except I’ve realized my mom followed her heart. She loved me the way she knew how. I’m not perfect but I love you in the only way I know how. My heart belongs to you and I can’t walk away.”
Want to know more about Drawn Together? Here you go!
Drawn Together by Wendi Zwaduk
Graig Case wants to teach history and coach baseball. Plain and simple. But nothing in his life has been simple. He’s also got a secret. He loves to watch the sexy woman across the courtyard dance. He’d love for his fantasy girl to be his best friend, but fantasy and reality don’t always mix.
Even love witches get the blues.
Havan’s magical potions bring couples together and give them the happily ever after of their dreams. Too bad her spells don’t work for her. In Erie View, the townspeople see nothing more than a witch. All she wants is to find that special man to embrace her quirks and love her. Will she be able to accept the blessings of the Goddesses or lose faith in herself?
Neil doesn’t believe in magic. It’s trickery for television and movies. No one creates a spell for people to fall in love. Hell, he doesn’t even believe in love. After a string of crappy dates and dead-end romances, he’s through with relationships. But a chance meeting at the grocery store changes his mind. Havan’s nothing like he expects—but is the blue haired witch enough to make him give romance another shot?
EXCERPT:
“Havan?”
The witch stood beside the car, the light from the street lamp illuminating her hair. She didn’t look at him, but didn’t move. So tiny and lonely next to the big vehicle. His heart broke. He’d been an ass to her and he needed to make things up to her.
“Havan.” Neil stopped beside her. He tugged her into his arms and stroked her hair. She felt so good in his embrace, perfect. “I’m so sorry, Havan. I’m not even sure what I want to say, but I like you.” He kissed the top of her head and closed his eyes. Her various bracelets and earrings jangled like sweet music in his head. He could hold her forever. “I’m sorry I’m being too pushy and pressing too hard. I’m a thirty-five-year-old construction worker who knows shit about dating, but I’m willing to learn. Give me another chance?”
She smoothed one hand up his chest, resting her palm over his heart. “You’re a good man,” she whispered. “You’re trying too hard and crushing me.”
“Because I like you.” He cupped her jaw in one hand and swiped his thumb over her cheek. Her eyes shone with unshed tears and she licked her bottom lip. He liked her more than he understood.
Neil lowered his mouth to hers and tasted her. She moaned beneath him and gripped his jacket, but didn’t pull away. From his head to his toes, his body vibrated. His skin tingled and when he opened his eyes for just a moment, he could’ve sworn she glowed. Did witches glow when they were turned on? He closed his eyes and tangled his tongue with hers. Something powerful passed between them and he never wanted to let her go.
After less than one date and a chance meeting at the shop, he’d fallen more than a little in love with her. Bullshit. Love didn’t happen that fast. But something had changed. The potion? No, he hadn’t drunk it. Had she spoken magical words? He doubted she’d said anything like that. She didn’t seem to believe in herself enough to try something devious.
Still, he refused to deny his attraction to her. He wanted more dates with her and to explore every inch of her delectable body. Now he had to hope she wanted the same thing from him.
Havan melted into his arms. He made bad jokes, but lots of people insulated themselves with insults against what they didn’t understand. Having a witch in town certainly left her open to being the object of ridicule. But he seemed to be different. Neil, despite all his faults, seemed to care. She clutched the sides of his coat and sighed into his kiss. The fever came over her again and she held him tighter. Venus must’ve smiled down on her or predetermined that she belonged to Neil. Couldn’t have been the potion. Could it?
Havan pulled away from him and stared into Neil’s blue eyes. His cheeks were flushed and his lips parted. “Come home with me.”
