The Honeydripper Affair
by Joanna Kidson

She should never have met up with Ryan, that’s for sure.

You see, Lucy Nevin has got something that people are willing to kill for - she just doesn't know it....yet.

Handing Ryan the notebook threw the killers off her scent for a while but as Lucy uncovers more details about the death of her father, it becomes clear that this ruthless gang of criminals will stop at nothing to get what they want from her.

And then Dan shows up. Is that coincidence or by design? Either way, she’s now sucked into a deadly game between the killers, the armed forces and the government. They all think that Lucy has the code – the code that will give them control of the internet. The scary thing is; if you’ve ever used the internet, this is happening to you right now.

Trouble is - time is running out for Lucy and she needs answers. What exactly is the Honeydripper Affair?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How about an excerpt? Sure! Here you go:
From Chapter Nine
Danny looked as though he knew this was coming. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table.
"Looking back, I should have acted differently, but at the time it seemed like the right thing to do. Everything happened so fast, I honestly thought it was best to get out of your life completely before I ruined it."
"Ruined it? Didn't you think that just leaving might have ruined it too?"
"I figured I was replaceable."
"That sounds like you're doing both of us a disservice."
"Do you remember telling me about how your mother left when you were younger?"
"Yes, I do. It's not a story I share very often," said Lucy, slightly confused.
"How she couldn't handle the way of life, the constant moving, the dangers of your father’s job. Well, that's what the future was looking like."
"But you could have asked me. Maybe I would have been okay with that."
"I had become a target, that means anyone close to me would have become a target too. That wasn't a particularly attractive lifestyle to offer anyone."
"A target?" Lucy asked. "But you work for local government - who's targeting you?"
"Local government is just a useful cover. I work for myself now. Call me an Intelligence Troubleshooter."
"Er...alright," Lucy said, deliberately leaving some space for him to fill.
"I provide information to the Ministry of Defence through a satellite agency."
"So, how does that make you a target?"
"Let's just say I'm a hands-on operator."
"So you're a secret agent," she said bluntly, with a slightly tongue in cheek smile.
"If you like, it's a bit different in the modern world."
"So basically, we've outsourced our spies!"
"Something like that. It's more convenient this way, less difficult questions when things go wrong. Much easier for the government to distance themselves."
"I still don't understand how you become a target?"
"When you're working out in the field you end up pretty close to the opposition. Sometimes it's a physical as well as a mental battle," Daniel explained.
"I didn't think that sort of thing really existed; you know, all that cloak and dagger stuff."
"It's unpredictable, that's for sure."
"I don't get why you didn't tell me all this before."
"It was all kicking off back then, everything was moving so fast. I was quite new to the whole way of life and I just didn't think it was safe to involve you."
"But you're telling me now," Lucy pointed out.
"Now you're involved directly. I've no real choice. It's ironic that the very thing that pushed me away has now pulled me back here."
Within the Crumbling Walls ~ Lucy Felthouse
I've found that the longer I've been writing, the more I find inspiration in the strangest places. And sometimes the inspiration doesn't strike me until much later. My story in Smut in the City is a perfect example of this.
I went to Rome in May 2012 for the first time. I fully expected to come home with some ideas for stories, and given I needed to get my story written for Smut in the City when I got back, then that was perfect. What I wasn't expecting, however, was for the inspiration to come from the Colosseum. It's an absolutely awe-inspiring place, but it's so busy and crowded that getting up to anything sexy would grant you a large audience of onlookers and possibly some time spent in an Italian jail.
But, would you believe, a metal barrier and a sign gave me an idea. The whole structure is ancient and crumbling, but there's a particular part of it which is fenced off from the public as it is apparently more dangerous than the rest. And it's here that I set the sex scene from my story. My horny characters slipped past the warning barrier and had some kinky fun with thousands of people just feet away from them.
And voila, Within the Crumbling Walls was born. Now, I know my ideas are sparked by unusual things, but I think a metal barrier has got to be the strangest.
Within the Crumbling Walls
By Lucy Felthouse
Exiting the Colosseo Metro station, Libby shot a grin at her boyfriend, Ciaran. “I don’t think we’ll have any trouble finding it, do you?”
“Hmm?” Ciaran frowned, then turned his gaze in the direction that Libby was pointing. He gave a sheepish smile. “No, I don’t think we will. Shall we put the map away?”
Libby nodded, and Ciaran spun round so she should take the map and load it into his backpack. Zipping it back up, she patted it twice to signal she was done. Ciaran turned and held out his hand. She took it, and together they took their lives in their hands crossing the busy Roman road and walked to the Colosseum.
Despite the early hour, the queue was already considerable, and the couple exchanged a wry look. But then Libby remembered something. “Hey, don’t look so glum babe. We can skip the queue, remember?”
Ciaran frowned. “We can?”
Pulling a small credit card shaped and sized item from her pocket, she replied, “Yes! Our Roma cards mean we can get in quicker. That was one of the selling points the rep kept going on about when she was trying to flog them to us.”
Ciaran slapped his forehead theatrically, then retrieved his own card from his pocket. “Of course!” He used his not inconsiderable height to peer over the heads of the group in front of him. “Okay, I see it. There’s a separate line for Roma Pass holders, and it’s moving tons quicker. Hurrah!”
He made his way through the crowd, using a combination of touches on people’s backs and the words “excuse me.” Libby followed quickly in his wake. Soon they were at the back of the very short and swiftly-moving queue. People passed through, showing their cards to a very stern-looking Italian man, who nodded and pointed them towards another line.
This time they scanned their cards through some kind of barcode reader, and finally, they were in. Within the crumbling walls of the ancient Colosseum, probably the most famous landmark in Rome. Looking around, Libby could see why.
Photos and videos didn’t do it justice. She wasn’t sure if Colosseum translated to colossal or not, but it was certainly the most apt word to describe the place. It really was huge—and they hadn’t even seen the best part yet. Following Ciaran from the ticket booth area—which was literally within the great walls—they passed out into the open area in the middle. Libby gasped. It was amazing.
They were at ground level, with two or three levels above—she wasn’t sure which—and of course, the one below. Where the gladiators, warriors and fierce creatures would have been kept before being forced to fight in the arena.
Realising Ciaran was gaping at the sight before them too, she encouraged him forward. “Come on, we’re kind of in the way here.” Looking left, she saw an area which was fenced off and held warning signs urging the public not to enter. Libby snorted. The whole place was falling to pieces, how could they possibly deem one section more dangerous than another?
Shaking her head, she turned her attention to the right and saw an area which would allow them a better view of the arena floor. She grabbed Ciaran’s hand and pulled him with her.
Leaning on a barrier and looking out, Libby saw that arena “floor” was not an accurate description. At one end of the enormous structure, a wooden base had been erected, but the rest of the oval was open, displaying what lay beneath. It looked like a labyrinth, and suddenly she became aware of an English-speaking tour guide telling his group the history of the place. She eavesdropped for a while, then fell to thinking how lucky she was to have been born in this day and age. She’d never know anyone who’d be thrown to their deaths in such a place—or be forced to watch them killed in such a brutal manner.
Guest Blogger: Sara Reinke
Sara Reinke's here today talking about her book, Dark Passages. Now being a fellow paranormal author, I was thrilled to host her. Welcome Sara!! I wanted to know lots and lots of things, but let's start with this: why paranormal? What's the draw of the vampire?
Hi, Wendi! Thanks so much for this opportunity to meet your readers. When I was a kid, I always had my nose stuck in a book—and usually it was one about ghosts, monsters, aliens or other supernatural phenomena. If the show had been around back then, my teachers probably would have told you I’d grow up to be like Fox Mulder from TV’s The X-Files.
I’m older now, a little more skeptical, in many ways more like Dana Scully, Mulder’s practical-minded partner on the show. I love researching the history, science, technology and logic behind things; considering ideas or theories that might explain the seemingly unexplainable.
Since I like to write paranormal romance, these dual components of my nature are often in conflict with each other. Take my Brethren Series, for example. I love the idea of vampires. I think their long-running appeal comes from the fact they’re blood-thirsty and predatory, yet somehow seductive and sensual.
A vampire is usually portrayed as stealing into his victim’s room under the cover of darkness, when she’s at her most vulnerable—asleep in bed. Despite this intrusion, he’s able to make her feel at ease, mesmerizing her into submission. By drinking her blood, penetrating her with his fangs, pressing his mouth against her throat, he’s intimate with her in a way that’s primitive, almost sexual.
I also think another part of the appeal of vampires is that although some are portrayed as living hundreds, even thousands of years, they retain a youthful appearance and stamina. Who wouldn’t want to look and feel like they’re twenty-something their entire lives? (And who wouldn’t want to have a lover with that kind of energy, lol?)
All that being said, the standard mythology behind them—they can’t be exposed to sunlight, see their reflection in a mirror, touch or be touched by holy water or other sanctified objects—has never made much sense to me. In order to make the Brethren work logically enough to write about them, I had to come up with my own mythos; in essence, I had to reinvent the vampire.
For me, that was part of the fun in writing The Brethren Series; it provided the perfect complement of both sides of my creative mind—Mulder’s “I want to believe” philosophy and Scully’s “I want to explain.” It’s taking the supernatural and hypothesizing about how it might be possible; trying to put some normalcy into the paranormal.
I’m pretty pleased with the results. The Brethren, for all of their wealth and powers, are basically as flawed as the rest of us; as motivated by guilt, greed, lust, love—you name it. Though they strive to live apart from humans whenever possible, they’re more like us than they’re willing to admit or accept. And therein lies the story.
I see on your site you love ferrets. Why ferrets?
I can’t take credit for the ferret love, LOL. The ferret button on my site is to support one of my closest friends, Devyn Quinn—also one of the most amazing paranormal authors I’ve ever read (www.devynquinn.com). She’s also the founder of Texico Ferret Rescue (www.texicoferretrescue.org), a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue and rehoming of domesticated ferrets in New Mexico and the Texas panhandle region.
There are tons of organizations across the U.S. that do the same for dogs and cats, and the reasons for having to give up a pet are many and varied. Devyn’s an animal-lover by nature, and she began taking in ferrets from pet-owners in her area who were either unable or unwilling to care for them anymore. Before long, as word spread around to veterinarians and pet stores, she found herself being asked to take on more and more. Texico Ferret Rescue was her solution. Through TFR, she assists in adopting ferrets to new homes, locating temporary “foster” homes for ferrets in need, and providing safe, comfortable living arrangements for ferrets who because of age or illness are unsuitable for adoption.
If you could be one of your characters, who would it be and why?
Karen from Dark Passages, of course—because she gets to see Tristan naked. ;)
Want an blurb? Here you go!
Tristan Morin is a vampire on a mission: to not fall in love with Karen Pierce. To do so would prove that humans and Brethren were meant to be physically and emotionally bound to each other -- something he, as a full-blooded Brethren, refuses to believe. It would be so much easier if Karen wasn't beautiful. And if there wasn't something about her that draws him like a moth to a flame, damn near impossible to resist.
Karen has always felt an inexplicable attraction to Tristan. More than just the fact he's strikingly handsome, it's as if being with him is something natural, comfortable and right. But soon a brash choice on his part leaves her heartbroken and confused, and a sadistic new enemy will put their tentative love -- and their lives -- to the ultimate test.
Whetted your whistle? Sure I did. Here's an excerpt:
Karen remembered another reason the name Davenant was known to her. “They’re the ones who tried to murder your family, aren’t they?” she asked, and Naima nodded.
“In 1812, they burned our great house to the ground, yes. Their objective was to kill everyone inside.”
But you’d already escaped, Karen thought. Augustus Noble found out what the Davenants had planned, and he warned Michel, helped the family to escape. The Davenants didn’t know, didn’t realize it, not at first, anyway.
“Probably not until last night,” Naima agreed, because unlike most other Brethren, she kept her mind wide open nearly all of the time, making her privy to the thoughts of just about anyone within her immediate vicinity.
“Jean Luc Davenant attacked us,” she continued. “He doesn’t possess the telekinesis of one who has fed from another Brethren, but he’s still physically very powerful. We fended him off, drove him away, but Michel thinks he’ll be back. And that he won’t be alone this time.”
“What will they do?” Karen asked. “The Davenants, I mean. When they find out the Morins are still alive?”
Allistair Davenant had been the worst among them, right? she thought. He was their Elder, the one who hated Augustus.
“I imagine they’ll try to kill us again,” Naima replied grimly. “They hated Michel, too, just as much as—if not more than—Augustus. And Allistair was far from the worst. There were seven Davenant brothers, each just as dangerous—and as deadly—as the last.”
