Bad Parents with Victoria Blisse!

I sometimes worry that if my mum or Dad ever did read one of my books they’d think my portrayal of parents had something to do with them. It really doesn’t.  I have several  characters in my books who have well, let’s call them challenging parents. Caitlyn in Fulfill Me http://victoriablisse.co.uk/books/fulfill-me  has a rock star father and a nagging mother, Terri in Getting Physical http://victoriablisse.co.uk/books/getting-physical  has a mum who thinks she’s fat and poor old Lily in Literally Bitten  http://victoriablisse.co.uk/books/literally-bitten  has a Dad who’s  a member of a fun hating cult!

My parents are awesome. My mum is always there when I need her, she’s practical and whimsical and always gives good advice. My Dad can always manage to make me laugh, will fix anything or at least give it a bloody good go and both of them have done a grand job of bringing me and my sister up.  I use them when I’m writing my fictional parents, but only as a good bench mark so I can find some really irritating features to give my fictional ones!  But writing about good parents isn’t really very fun. Even the good ones I mention have their bad traits. Leanna in Naughty Rendezvous http://victoriablisse.co.uk/books/naughty-rendezvous  would be lost without hers but she is very brash and in your face and sometimes not very understanding.

My latest parental offering though is a complex one. Ronald in Literally Bitten http://victoriablisse.co.uk/books/literally-bitten  loves his daughter, but he’s been pulled into a crazy cult called called Purity that basically protests at everything. His life became dull and boring, his focus was very negative and Lily eventually decided to leave home.  She opens a book shop, meets Tom and through an interesting and sexy interlude they end up accompanying each other to The Point, a Vampire Bar (and one Blisse fans might recognise as it’s one of my regular haunts!) and who do they find outside? Yep. Lily’s Dad and a bunch of his Purity Pals.  It isn’t a pretty confrontation. Here’s Tom and Lily Chatting about it a bit later:

“How are you, anyway?” Tom asked. “You were really shaken before.”

“Yeah, when you’ve not seen your dad in years and then   you bump into him and he’s threatening to kill you and all your kind it does take the wind from your sails.”

“Sorry, Lily, I didn’t mean to upset you.” Tom covered her hand with his. It wasn’t warm but the weight still managed to make her feel hotter.

“Oh, no, you didn’t upset me, no. You were great and I really appreciate your care. It was my father who upset me. Seeing him and being reminded of what he’s like.”

“Has he always been that freaky  ?” Tom seemed genuinely interested and Lily felt she could confide in him. It was weird how much she already trusted him but he had proved to be worthy of it so far.

“I have very vague memories of Dad laughing. The older I get the more I’m convinced they’re fantasies but I do like to believe at some point when I was younger my dad was actually happy and sane. I think the weird controlling issues started after Mum died. I was only little, though, so I can’t really say from experience.”

“It’s sad, I feel sorry for him. I mean, no wonder he’s so afraid of things when he pushes anyone who loves him away.”

“Yeah, I think you’re right. So what about your family? Do they know what you are?”

“No, my dad died many years ago and Mum passed away when I was in my late teens. I’ve been alone for many years now.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. That’s a really useless thing to say, really. But there you go. I’m  sure you’re getting used to me saying stupid things by now.”

“It’s sweet, thank you. And I haven’t noticed you saying anything stupid, I’ve been too busy tripping over my own silliness.” 

Lily was struck by his gracious reply and easy laughter. Not something she was terribly used to getting.

“I haven’t noticed your silliness, I’ve been too busy appreciating how hot you are.”

“Really?” He sounded genuinely surprised.

“Hell, yeah. Did you notice how much notice I took of our dinner fucking? I couldn’t stop looking at you.”

“I did see an awful lot of your pretty  blue eyes, yes. I’m not complaining, mind. They’re so expressive and beautiful  .”

Lily locked her gaze with his.

“What can you see in them now, then?”

Her heart palpitated. It still surprised her that the useless old muscle would still respond to emotion. She wondered if it was a real bodily reaction or if it was just imagined because she knew that was how she would normally react as a human. He looked intently  her . It seemed as if he could read her, no need for glasses or a translator. She felt like she was his favourite, well-loved book.

“You want me to kiss you,” he whispered and all she managed was a nod in acquiescence as their lips met.
