Lake of Destiny
by Martina Boone
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For centuries, Loch
Fàil in Balwhither has been known to locals as a ‘thin’ place, one where the
veil between worlds peels back on Beltane morning to reveal the face of a
person's one true love. The tradition could draw tourists by the busload, but
that’s exactly what Connal MacGregor fears will expose the two secrets he's
been desperate to keep hidden.
As Anna struggles to
mediate between the needs of the village and Connal’s need to protect his
identity and his child, she finds herself falling in love with all of them:
Connal and his daughter, the magical glen, the villagers. But day by day,
opening herself to love exposes deep scars from Anna’s childhood, and
confronting those wounds could finally set her free--or endanger her every
chance of happiness.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now for an excerpt:
“Your teeth are chattering. What are you doing out here?
What happened?” Connal looked back at the drunk who was just going back inside
the inn, his expression changing from puzzled to furious.
He half-turned as if to go after the man, but Anna grabbed
his sleeve, needing his warmth. Needing not to be alone.
Connal had no coat to take off, and Anna saw the moment of
hesitation before he reached for her and started to rub her arms, trying to
warm her up.
Big fires started with a little bit of friction.
He touched her. Looked down at her. They looked at each
other. Her heart skittered, and his eyes dropped to her mouth.
This was probably stupid, a stupid thing to do, but she
clearly couldn’t avoid messes, and where had being careful gotten her in her
life? Henry and Mike and nowhere. . . . No, not nowhere.
Here.
She didn’t step away. Connal had that shimmer around him
again, and the electricity in the air all seemed to concentrate itself around
her into one hard shove, pushing her feet forward into his arms. Connal stared
as she fell against him, stared a long moment without moving, and then his hand
slid almost reluctantly along the column of her neck and the curve of her
cheek, lingering there, a question written on his features.
Do you want this?
Yes. Heavens, yes, Anna thought, though she couldn’t have
said a word even if she’d tried.
