BETTY Prince gently tugged on the frayed cord from the Venetian blinds. If she pulled too hard, the blinds would slip off their brackets and crash to the floor, startling the Congressman awake. She only wanted to let in the sunlight, to let Congressman Stevens know his long night of working in his office was over. It was the third time this week she’d found him asleep on that cracked leather couch. He was working too hard.

Andrew Stevens kept his eyes shut against the sun. He could feel the stiffness in his neck from sleeping without a pillow. His legs felt tight from trying to fit his six-foot-two-inch frame onto a couch four inches too short. He could tell he needed a shower. But he wasn’t ready to face the day and he wasn’t ready for another one of Betty’s lectures. She meant well, but the last thing he needed in Washington was another woman watching over him.

Too many of his colleagues’ wives had already overwhelmed him with kindness. His small refrigerator held more casseroles, more congealing dishes of Welsh rarebit, than he could eat in a month. Plus, all the dinner invitations. Always to meet some eligible niece in town visiting. Some dear female friend.

The wives embarrassed him by saying they were sure he’d be one of the brightest stars in Congress. They insisted he needed a good woman behind him to help him get ahead. His own mother, back home in Michigan, wrote him weekly to say the same thing.

Even after spending a few years researching and many more years writing. Maybe it's the idea of having something sort of shady going on right down the street and none of the neighbors had the faintest idea. (Warning: No sex or even steamy scenes)

“Can’t sleep, but you go ahead.” I bit my lip, trying to keep the moan from escaping. His teeth teased the sensitive skin below my right ear. My eyes slid shut, thrilling at the feel of his shadow beard as it grazed my neck. Tendrils of desire scorched a path wherever he touched. The man was a drug to my senses, a drug I wanted to imbibe, overindulge in, again and again until we were both spent.

We had not exchanged any words regarding our feelings toward each other. Put in perspective, none were needed. He showed me that I mattered, gave up his world for me, defied his mother with his go-fuck-yourself attitude that I’d come to admire.

“Come, shower with me, cara,” he murmured in a deep, lust-soaked voice that made my body zing to life. His hands cupped my breasts, and moisture flooded my center. The roughened pads of his fingers grazed my nipples, sending currents of delicious need thrumming into my core. The man touched me, and I was lost. Who was I kidding? When the damn man looked at me with those come-hither crystalline green eyes smoldering with indecent passion, I practically came on the spot. His hands stroked my flesh. The rational part of my brain, the one not attuned to satiating my hunger for him, knew I had to stop him.

My body yearned to acquiesce to his passionate demands. Except I couldn’t. Why did I always complicate things further? When I arrived, the interior of the gallery looked dark and deserted, but he stepped to the door to let me in. He wore a black button-up shirt, the tails hanging over his well-worn jeans. His sleeves were rolled up, showing those strong, muscular hands. His eyes were dark and mysterious, yet his smile said he was happy to see me.

Ushering me in, he locked the door behind us and took me into his arms. It hit me how big he was, in comparison to my small frame. My head was within the reach of his chin when in his arms, and his body towered over mine. I felt small, but safe in his arms.

“I’ve missed you,” he said, kissing the top of my head, pulling me closer.

“You have? I thought it was just me, missing you.” I nuzzled into his chest.

“Were that the truth, things would be a lot easier,” he said with a sigh. “Then this would just be a student crush to contend with as opposed to both of us having, um, feelings. But—”

He paused, and pulled away a few inches, stopping himself.

“But what?”

“I am afraid I am going to lose my resolve to not ravish you, so tonight, this calls for a new sketch.”

“What if someone comes in this time?”

“They won’t. I have a contractual agreement with the gallery that no one can be in this space or come in the door after eight p.m. while I am working on the installation. So it’s all ours.”

I’m melting into him. For the first time, I’m not fighting against Drew Markham. I’m moving toward him, with him. It happens slowly for the first few seconds as we’re hesitant in our actions and unsure of one another’s intentions. But somewhere within those inches we both draw the same conclusion. I lurch toward him and he catches me in his arms, both of us falling backward onto the couch. Our lips connect with a ferocity that is jarring.

My hands are under his shirt, feeling the smooth plane of his back, absorbing his warmth through my skin. We’re both gasping and panting, pushing and pulling. And then he stops. I nearly fall off the couch when I no longer have the resistance of his body to push against. I pull back and look up at him, confused.

“W-what? What is it?”

His eyes are closed and he’s shaking his head. His face is a mask of regret.

“Drew?”

“I can’t. I’m sorry, Katherine. You…me…”

He gestures toward the four empty bottles of wine on the coffee table. “We’ve both had way too much. You’re still not a hundred percent well. I’m your professor. You’re my student. There are a million different reasons why we need to stop this. Why I need to stop this. Right now. Right. Now.”

I take a deep breath and extricate myself from what’s left of his embrace.

“I don’t know where that came from,” he’s muttering, more to himself, than to me. “What’s wrong with me? I know better.”

With a sigh, I wonder the same thing about myself. We hate one another. Don’t we? Apparently not. But even I, with my limited knowledge of psychology, recognize that there’s a very fine line between love and hate. Not that I love him or anything. But I certainly wouldn’t mind another one of those kisses.

Lauren Rico was going to be principal French horn of the New York Philharmonic. That was HER plan, anyway. The New York Philharmonic had no idea of her intentions, and that's probably a good thing, since she wasn't an especially good French horn player!

Cassie sighed with shivering contentment as Lee tenderly explored her body. Her response intensified as she strained against him—opened for him—reached to direct him inside. Every quivering nerve in her body tingled, creating a buzzing in her head that grew louder and louder.

The buzzing alarm persisted, shattering the dream at the crucial moment when Lee was about to enter her. Frustrated, Cassie reluctantly opened her eyes. Her mouth was cotton-dry. She was still shaking with sexual anticipation, but with her waking reality came the colossal letdown.

She ran her hand down her arm, feeling the goose bumps. She yearned for that mind-blowing climax she’d almost achieved in that fantastic dream. It was the same dream she’d had for years, varying only slightly in intensity.

She glared at the clock, hating it for interrupting. Inexplicably, as always, that fantasy dream had kindled an overwhelming, obsessive desire to experience what her imagination tortured her with—ephemeral glimpses of satisfaction in Lee’s arms and their ultimate body connection.

Cassie released a dejected sigh as she sat up and hugged her knees. For a moment she allowed herself to bask in the dream’s sizzling afterglow, her thoughts running back to the evening before and her first face-to-face meeting with her fantasy lover, Lee Harris.

Though their initial meeting hadn’t been as good as she’d hoped it would be, it was better than she’d expected, given what she’d heard about how despondent and irritable he’d become—and how unruly he was with the other therapists. All of them had given up on him. She would not.

Eolyn shifted in her seat. A thousand words stood poised upon her lips, of which only a handful could be chosen and delivered. Each conversation in the coming days had to be undertaken with great care, especially when it came to this mage.

“Why did Thelyn come for us, and not you?” she asked.

“I was needed to track down the magas still residing in the City,” Corey replied. “Besides, Thelyn was the better mage for that task.”

Mariel, she thought. He would not have had the heart to bind Mariel.

A small sign, perhaps, that Mage Corey could yet be counted among her friends.

“I understand you are to oversee their interrogation,” Eolyn said.

“It is true, my Lady Queen.”

“I have expressed my concerns about this to the King. He assures me that you and your mages will not be permitted to—”

“My Lady Queen, if there is one thing you have learned in the years of our friendship, it is that I will do whatever must be done in the moment at hand, and I will harden my heart to see it through.”

“That may be the case, Mage Corey. Yet I also know that words are your most effective tool. You have never resorted to violence to obtain what you require.”

Corey let her statement hang in the air.

Eolyn averted her gaze, suddenly aware of the icy tension in her hands.

I, too, am being interrogated.

“You did not bring a scribe,” she said quietly.

“What need have I for a scribe, my Lady Queen?” He softened his tone. “We are, as of yet, simply conversing.”
