Stargazer

by David Scott

For thousands of years, stars have held our attention and imagination. They influence our life—we wish upon them, sing songs about them, navigate by them, write about them, follow them, and even give their name to the actors we love. My memories have revealed a lifetime of navigating by the stars, and moving beyond the fear and anxiety that self-doubt so insidiously cloaks us in. Yes, as Jiminy Cricket sang for us in Walt Disney's Pinocchio, "when you wish upon a star . . . fate steps in and sees you through."

Memories and influences have a profound effect on our lives. I look back on my childhood years—the 1940s to mid-'50s—and I can recall the people who were inspirational to me. Mostly it was my family, but there was also Jiminy Cricket. You no doubt recollect the song "When You Wish Upon a Star," with its lyrics that lift the spirit and let you believe anything is possible. I didn't doubt Jiminy for a minute.

The early years of my life were a time of innocence, security, adventure, and family love. How quickly my situation changed—one decision by my parents, made with my best interests foremost in their thoughts, shattered the world I had known. Through the fear, torment, isolation, and loss of my own identity, my memories and influences would come to have an overwhelming power on the choices I was to make.

My transition from teenager to adult seemed to happen overnight, but my unflappable outward appearance belied the struggles of a boy coming to terms with his guilt, and an irresistible need for his parents to be proud of him. My future was being shaped from the past, but it took me a long time to realise it. I chose the road less travelled, steeped in the wonder of the cinema and accompanied by my beloved animal companions, and it has been intriguing, daunting, rewarding, and, at times, solitary, but I always felt it was the path I was meant to take.

Like so many people, I let the emotions attached to memories hold me captive, and I missed opportunities to choose with more clarity. A near-death experience helped me to live a simpler life. Participating in a creative writing course inspired me to engage in script writing, stage work, and novel writing. This is my third book, an autobiography that has revealed more of me than I ever intended to share, and fate has led you to it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now for an excerpt!!
Turning points in my life that readjusted my nature: the first was my boarding school experience, the next was the death of my father, another was my first love, and then there was a helping hand by a television celebrity when my spirits were at their lowest. And the last, so far, was a near-death experience. Of course, there were many other dips and rises in my existence but none as significant as those five. I would be jumping the gun if I went into them now, as you need to know how my life was at the time to fully understand how profoundly the events affected me.
My genes possess a trait some may say is bullheadedness, but I prefer to call it motivation. Well, it must be to have beaten millions of spermatozoa in the breaststroke race to the womb! Mind you, the same characteristic has steered me down more wrong paths than I will ever own up to.
It was probably the errant ferret rather than planning that brought me to centre stage in 1943, seven years behind my brother and eight years after my sister. My parents must have been flat-out running movie theatres, building houses, rearing children and dealing with the usual chores and dramas of young couples, so a baby at that time must have come as a shock—not that it was ever complained about.
We shifted from Wodonga before I turned four, so my recollections of living there are liable to be like out-of-sequence movie scenes. But be warned: after that they are comparable to Cecil B. DeMille epics.
Some may challenge this memory, but I believe I learnt about frustration in the cradle, when my ungainly arms and hands couldn’t pick up an object beside me. But I am a prolific dreamer so maybe it’s what I imagined.
Rufus, the family dog, waddled through the end of his life as I crawled and then skipped into mine. He was deaf and almost blind, yet he faithfully plodded behind me and my siblings as we ran errands around town. He was predominantly Labrador with a few other breeds thrown in to give him a shaggy coat. He may not have been as big as I remember, but as I was small, Rufus seemed humongous.
While my siblings were at school, Rufus and I discovered the secrets of our front and backyard, and on Sundays, when Dad drove us into the country for picnics, Rufus squeezed onto the car’s back seat between my brother, Max, and me. Pat, my sister, also sat in the rear, but because Rufus would let off cracker farts, she was always by the farthest window from him. Whenever he let one off, Pat whinged and poked her head out the window while Mum lectured Dad about “his” dog. Max and I smelt it as a joke and patted Rufus, who lapped up the attention.
Blank: Madam Doesn’t Like That by Zhanna Hamilton
It's a tour and this book is hot. Come check it out. The author is giving away a cool prize, too. What? Zhanna Hamilton will be awarding a $75 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Want more chances to win? Then follow the tour. You can do that here: https://goddessfishpromotions.blogspot.com/2021/08/vbt-blank-madam-doesnt-like-that-by.html
Blank: Madam Doesn’t Like That
by Zhanna Hamilton
A former human turned military spy bot escapes the oppressive Solar Government, leaving behind a secret that turns order into chaos. Now, she’s being hunted.
Blank:
Madam Doesn't Like That (Short Story 4 of The Blank Series):
An unexpected visit from sex bots turns into a secret mission with deadly consequences.
Now for an interview with the author!
Describe yourself in three words.
Intuitive. Passionate. Curious.
Cast your book. Tell us who would play the main characters in a movie and why.
Aura Swain, the former human turned military spy bot, needs to be played by an actress that can morph into a multi-faceted antihero. Scarlett Johansson would be an ideal fit for this character. She has demonstrated her ability to embody such roles through an array of films, including Ghost in the Shell, Lucy and Black Widow.
As for her secret lover, Arlo Fuentes, he is a man secure enough to handle Swain’s strong personality. This is also a character in touch with his softer side and has the looks to get Swain’s attention in the first place. William Levy could bring this role to life with his on-screen charm and toned physique.
What’s your favorite love scene from a movie?
The car romance scene from Titanic is one of my favorite love scenes. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are electric together and the thrills they experience on their forbidden adventure will forever be iconic.
What is the naughtiest thing you did as a kid?
When I was a child, I would ask for candy and instead of eating it, I saved it. This practice eventually led me to have a stash of candy that I would eat whenever I wanted, without having to ask. Apparently, that was against the rules. The candy was confiscated!
Anything else you’d like to add?
If the readers would like to see celebrity reaction videos to The Blank Series, they can head over to my Instagram.
Now for an excerpt:
Arlo read a large sign passing by on the boulevard.
KILL ALL BOTS!
“What the hell is Razor doing?”
"She’ll be fine. She does it all the time.”
“Does what all the time? Never mind. Don’t tell me. We have to stop her.”
Zen crossed her legs, tapped the console with long, golden nails and stared past the protest.
“You stop her.”
He watched Razor lift a helmet off the ground and put it on, pumping her fist as she walked into the chanting crowd.
“I can’t be in a protest, Zen. I have a career to protect.”
“Sounds inconvenient.”
“Don’t we have somewhere to be?”
“And we’ll get there.”
“This is ridiculous,” he said, stepping out of the pod. He tried to spot her. Nothing but angry strangers. Walking towards the crowd, he felt the electric energy of frustration.
“PEOPLE OVER BOTS! PEOPLE OVER BOTS!”
He stood at the edge of the moving spectacle and scanned for Razor.
Against the grain of the crowd, he spotted the oversized biker’s helmet with flowing blonde locks extending beyond the edges. She grabbed a bat off the ground near a closed psychedelics store.
“Razor, no!” he yelled, his voice drowned by the raging chorus.
Dingo (Devil’s Fury MC) by Harley Wylde
#mcromance #darkromance #AsianHeroine
Meiling -- All I’ve ever known is pain. My life has been far from a fairy tale. No parents. No friends. Just an endless nightmare that I can’t wake from. Until the day a man offered me his hand and promised to keep me safe. I’ve never trusted anyone before, but there’s something about him. Maybe it’s insane, but I know he won’t hurt me, and when he puts his arms around me, for the first time in my life I feel loved.
Dingo -- I’ve always had a soft spot for women and kids in trouble. One look at Meiling, and I knew I had to protect her at any cost. The beautiful girl with the wounded soul. After all she’s suffered, all I want is to make her smile, make her feel secure, and give her a chance to find happiness. But first, I need to take out the men and women responsible for hurting her. It might get ugly, and messy, but they don’t call me Dingo for nothing. I’m a crazy bastard, and I won’t stop until she’s safe. I just didn’t count on falling for her along the way.
Publishers warning: Meiling’s past isn’t pretty. Dingo and Meiling’s story deals with issues of human trafficking, bureaucratic corruption, and vigilante justice. This book contains darker themes that may trigger some readers.
The new-ish compound for the bikers wasn’t too terribly far from the Ruby Slipper, but walking in four-inch heels made it feel like I’d hiked for miles by the time I reached the gates. I had my large bag slung over my shoulder that had everything I owned, which wasn’t much, and I fully expected the jackass at the gate to dig through it. He eyed it a moment, then raked me over with his gaze from head to toe.
“You here to party?” he asked.
I winked and gave him a sexy smirk. “You know it.”
The guy chuckled and waved me through. I sashayed through the gates and up to the clubhouse. Music was pounding so loud I could hear it clearly through the closed door and windows. When I pushed my way inside, the thick smoke clinging to the air made my eyes sting as I squinted and tried to take it all in.
“Meiling?”
I blinked and jerked my head to the right, my jaw dropping as Beau came toward me, shoving his way through the crowd from the bar.
“What the hell are you doing here?” he asked, his tone a little harsh as he glanced around.
And just like that, the heart I’d thought I didn’t have anymore broke in two. Of course. Me being here would embarrass him. If I’d known Beau was part of the Devil’s Fury, I’d have kept my distance. The fact I hadn’t seen him since he ran should have spoken volumes. I didn’t blame him for not coming back for me. And I didn’t blame him now for the frantic way he scanned the crowd, as if he were afraid someone would link the two of us together.
“I’m sorry, Beau. I didn’t know you were part of the Devil’s Fury. I wouldn’t have come if…” I swallowed hard.
Beau jolted forward, and a large man leered down at me. “Prospect, you know the rules. Patched members get the pussy first. Go tend the bar.”
The leather vest he wore said Scorpion on it. I assumed that was his name. He wasn’t bad-looking, not that looks had ever mattered to me. But this was Beau’s territory, and I needed to leave. Looked like I’d be sleeping in my usual spot after all.
“I was just leaving,” I said.
“Really?” asked Scorpion. “Because it looked to me like you just arrived. And, honey, I have plans for you.”
“I didn’t know that…” I glanced at Beau. His jaw was clenched tight and his eyes were flashing. Yeah. I needed to leave. Seeing me would be a painful reminder to him. Thankfully, he’d never know what happened after he left. It was a secret I intended to take to my grave.
Without another word, I turned and walked out. I knew he wouldn’t follow, wouldn’t stop me. I didn’t know about the other guy, but he probably didn’t want some woman he had to chase down. I hurried through the gate and back onto the street, then made my way to the bridge on the outskirts of town. The laughter and crude jokes reached my ears long before the men came into view. I stopped, hesitating. I could still go down there, curl up and rest for a bit… for a cost.
Montauk, Long Island
Saturday Morning
Amanda Thorne turned full circle in the three-story entryway, her sensible two-inch heels clicking against the expensive slate flooring. Sparing one last, longing glance at the great room to her right, she engaged the alarm, closed the door behind her, and dropped her keys in the realtor’s lock box.
The past eight years of her life—the last vestige of her inheritance—gone.
Right on time, the taxi pulled into the long, winding driveway, stopping just inches from where she waited. The driver, a short, stocky man who reminded her of her maternal grandfather, took her single suitcase and placed it in the trunk.
“Where to, Miss?” he asked.
“LaGuardia, please. Domestic terminal.”
He held the door open and waited for her to settle into the seat before slipping behind the steering wheel and shifting his weight to get comfy.
“Going to visit family?” he asked, casually starting up a conversation.
“No,” she said softly. “I’m relocating.”
He shot her a quick glance over his shoulder before pulling the car into gear and starting out across the inlaid brick drive. “You’re moving away from Long Island?”
His question sent a sharp pain through her chest. After all, who in their right mind would leave Long Island, especially the beautiful area of Montauk?
It’s not like you had a choice, now did you?
Amanda bit back an angry curse, willing her conscience back into its allotted corner of her mind. Suddenly remembering the man’s question, she told him, “I’m taking a job out of state. As much as I’ll miss parts of New York, I won’t miss the winters.”
“Ah,” he said, chuckling. “You’re relocating somewhere warm.” He paused, then asked, “Were those your three moving vans I passed on the way from the highway?”
Three vans? Not hardly.
The single small load truck she’d hired had held everything she owned, save for what she’d packed for her trip. So, if there was a caravan of trucks, it wasn’t hers.
“No, not mine,” she acknowledged finally.
He turned the taxi onto the highway leading to the airport. “Good luck to you, wherever you’re headed.”
“Thank you.”
Sliding her fingertips over the screen of her cell, Amanda pulled up her reservation-- the short vacation a gift from the real estate agent who’d benefited greatly from the sale of her home.
Diamond Key Resort, San Bella Island. An island paradise, or so the brochure claimed. All she wanted was time to recoup, a handful of days to reset her emotional clock and prepare herself for her new life.
A week alone... away from the cloying pity of her so-called friends and family.
With any luck, she’d come out of her short stay no worse for the wear.
“Did you feel that way when I got married? That I was leaving you behind in a way?”
“I was happy for you,” her mother said. “I think most parents are, but time goes by so fast. One moment your kids are babies and the next, they’re graduating and off to college.”
Bianca winced. “Don’t remind me, please.”
“See what I mean?” her mother continued. “Alyssa is not too far behind.”
“And now there’s a boy.”
Her mother grinned. “I see. How’s that going?”
Bianca’s eyes widened slightly. “No ‘she’s too young to be dating’? Isn’t that what you said to me at her age?”
Her mother waved off her question. “I’m the grandmother, so I can spoil her. I was only strict with you and Melanie.”
“Traitor.”
Her mother winked at her.
“Well, I want to meet the boy before she goes out with him.”
Her mother bobbed her head. “Now you remind me of your father. That’s exactly what he said when you told us about your crush on Malcom. He wanted to hire a private investigator.”
Bianca’s mouth fell open. “He didn’t.”
“I stopped him,” her mother said. “After I told him I would keep an eye on you two.”
“I still can’t believe you followed us on our first date.” Bianca ran a finger over her eyebrow.
“It was either him or me.” Her mother paused as her fingers drifted to her now bare ring finger. “Sometimes I can still hear him laughing. Even in my dreams, I can see his face. Hear his voice. To think we almost made forty years.”
Bianca touched her mother’s hand. “I miss him.” There’d been terrible beyond health circumstances. If only his heart had been stronger, but it took him away from the family too soon.
Her mother patted her hand. “Me too.”
“Ladies and gentlemen, the bride and groom are heading out!” the DJ announced through his microphone.
Bianca grabbed her small purse and the small drawstring bag that was filled with birdseed. She smiled, knowing her friend didn’t want the birds to choke on rice. She followed along with her mother as they tossed the birdseed at the couple. The limo waited for them, but Chad kissed Nicole one more time before opening the door. The crowd cheered only louder.
Bianca managed one last glance at Jordan, but he slipped away from the crowd. She didn’t blame him for not staying, but since he was Nicole’s best friend, Bianca knew he would show his support. He’d do anything for Nicole.
Tossing more birdseed, family and friends cheered and whistled at the newlywed couple. Bianca’s chest swelled. Her friend’s bouquet was tucked underneath her arm. Would she get married again? Bianca would think about that later. Right now, she wanted to get out of her five-inch pumps. They’d served their purpose, but she was grateful that she had flats in her car.
Chad opened the door for his new wife, only to hear Nicole’s high-pitched scream. Bianca’s instincts kicked in and she scurried to her friend’s side. Nicole’s face paled. Looking inside the limousine, Bianca spotted someone sitting across from where they stood.
She didn’t hesitate to walk to the other side. Bianca gasped at the sight.
OUT NOW—The Persecution of the Wolves by Lucy Felthouse (@cw1985) #paranormal #wolves #werewolves #shifter #thriller
 Someone’s got it in for the Adams brothers. But who? And why?
Werewolf brothers Matthew and Isaac have lived in the peaceful village of Eyam, Derbyshire all their lives. The villagers know what they are, and have their reasons for keeping quiet. But this secrecy comes at a cost—the brothers can’t risk romantic entanglements.
Then, at the next full moon, a sheep is slaughtered on Eyam Moor, by what could only be a large animal. Even the brothers’ staunchest supporters begin to have their doubts about who—or what—could have done it.
As the brothers fight to clear their names, things are complicated by unexpected opportunities to indulge their lust. Isaac is intrigued by a handsome newcomer to the village, and a vivacious visitor is happy to offer Matthew her all.
Can the men prove their innocence, or is their centuries-old secret about to be revealed to the outside world, bringing their carefully crafted existence crashing down around their ears?
Excerpt:
Chapter One
Modern day Eyam
As Matthew and Isaac Adams stepped through the front door to their house, the telephone started ringing. Matthew sighed. “Typical. No rest for the wicked. I’ll answer it—you go and get ready for work.”
Isaac nodded and headed off to do as his brother advised. Matthew, the older of the two, walked up to the ringing phone and snatched it off the hook. Then, remembering the person on the other end of the line would have no idea what a rough night he’d just had, he made the effort to inject some politeness into his tone.
“Hello? Adams residence.” Isaac had told him time and time again the last part about the residence was old fashioned, that people didn’t say that anymore, but Matthew couldn’t seem to shake it.
“Hello, Matthew? It’s Richard.” The village vicar’s voice, even though he’d only spoken four words, sounded strained, almost panicked. “You boys just get back?”
“Yes, a moment ago. Why, what’s up?”
“I, uh… I got a call. A dead sheep has been found up on the moor. Not just dead. Mutilated. Like an animal attack.”
An unpleasant feeling wormed its way under Matthew’s skin and his stomach flipped. “Oh?” He paused, then figured he had nothing to gain by not saying the next words he wanted to. “You don’t think it was us?”
The vicar’s gasp was instant, one of genuine surprise. “Lord, no! Absolutely not. I just phoned to let you know and I was wondering if you’d come up there with me and take a look? You and Isaac are probably more qualified than anyone else in the village to tell what did this.”
“Isaac has to work. He just went to get ready. But yes, I’ll come up. I’ll let my brother know where I’m going, then I’ll be straight over. Are you at the rectory?”
“Yes. Okay, I’ll see you soon. Thanks, Matthew. Bye.”
“Goodbye.”
Matthew hung up the phone with another sigh. The horrible feeling that had crept under his skin and taken over his gut seemed as if it was there to stay, and it was never a good sign. The vicar’s news was surprising, yes, but he also had an inkling it was going to spell trouble, or at the very least inconvenience for him and his brother.
Pulling in a deep breath in an attempt to calm his jangling nerves, Matthew walked upstairs and towards his brother’s bedroom. The door was closed. He knocked. “You decent?”
“Yeah,” Isaac replied, “close enough.”
Matthew stepped into the room and looked at his brother. He was half-dressed, almost ready for his shift at the doctors’ surgery, where he was a general practitioner. “Sorry to interrupt, mate, but that was Richard on the phone. Someone’s found a mutilated sheep up on the moor, and he’s asked me to go with him to check it out.”
Isaac paused with one arm pushed into his shirtsleeve. “He doesn’t think—”
“No. He was quite adamant about that. He just thought we’d be able to help figure out what did it. I explained you’ve got to go to work, though. I’m going to head across there now and go up with him.”
“I could phone in, let them know I’ll be late.”
Matthew held up his hand. “There’s no need, brother. Relax. Just go to work and help the sick people. I’ll let you know what—if anything—I find out.”
Isaac opened his mouth, then closed it again, apparently having thought better of whatever he was going to say. He continued to dress. “All right, I will. But make sure you let me know what happens. Send me a text or something, and I’ll phone you as soon as I have a gap in between patients.”
Matthew grimaced. He hated texting. Hated mobile phones, actually. Technology was one of the things he disliked most about modern-day life, though it was a necessary evil. It solved as many problems for him and his brother as it created, so he dealt with it as best he could. Fortunately, Isaac had always had an affinity with computers and phones, so he tutored Matthew.
“Yes, all right. I’d better go and find my phone first then, eh?”
Smirking at his brother’s rolled eyes, he left the room and headed for his own bedroom, where he thought he’d left the device the previous night before he and Isaac had headed for the caves. On spotting the mobile phone—which Isaac often made a point of telling him was akin to a brick—he grabbed it, stuffed it into his pocket, and made his way downstairs.
Retrieving his keys from the hook by the front door, he called up to his brother. “I’m going now, Isaac. I’ll see you after my shift at the pub. I’m working until closing time.”
“Okay. Don’t forget to keep me posted.”
“I won’t.” As if he could forget. The dead sheep was going to be a big thing, he just knew it. The vicar might not think he and his brother had anything to do with it, but some of the other villagers might. When there was no proof either way, just his and Isaac’s word, it was understandable, really. Since he and his brother changed into wolves every full moon, it was a natural conclusion to draw. Particularly since wolves had been extinct in England for over five hundred years.
There are some things that should go without saying. For example, don’t leave a coffin in your business partner’s driveway. It’s just not done.
But there was a coffin in my driveway. And it had wheels. I looked from the black coffin to the yellow bungalow. Yep, it was my house. Just above the peaked roofline, fog blurred a watery sun.
“Do you have any idea why there’s a coffin in my driveway?” Because there was really only one person who would put one there. I tore my gaze from the wooden coffin to Hyperion. “And why is it on wheels?”
He shifted his weight. “Didn’t I mention the coffin race?”
“No.”
“Why’d you think I had a t-shirt cannon?”
“I still have no idea why you’ve got one.”
“For the coffin race.” He patted the coffin’s hood.
I waited.
“I entered Beanblossom’s in the race,” he said patiently. “We’re going as the Death card. I’ve got a scythe and everything.”
“A scythe at high speeds. What could go wrong?”
“It’ll be like in one of those Italian medieval morality parades. Did you know those parades most likely spawned the Tarot’s major arcana cards?”
“Oh, boy.”
“Or was it the Renaissance?” He shook his head. “They were in Italy. I know that much.”
Briony Fairborn, a midwife in eighteenth-century Scotland, comes from a family shrouded in scandal. Left with only one friend after her mother’s death, she has little hope of gaining any others, let alone finding a husband. Instead, Briony tries to live a quiet life and avoid her neighbors’ ridicule as much as possible.
But things in Everton take a drastic turn when a storm brings foreigners to the village docks.
On the night Santiago Mendes arrives, he comes with a broken ship, a broken leg, and a broken spirit that Briony finds herself profoundly drawn to. Her scarred heart slowly starts to open, and although Briony suspects he may be hiding something, she cannot help but dream of the possibility of love.
That is, until another stranger appears in town, intent on repaying a childhood debt. A dangerously handsome stranger who shows Briony that she’s even more different than she could have imagined. And that her past is far darker than she realized.
Magic, romance, and political intrigue collide as the secrets surrounding one Scottish woman begin to unravel. Secrets that she may not be ready to face.
Screams drew Briony from her state of shock. They pierced the darkness as terribly as the lightning hitting the ground.
Except ’tis na just hitting the ground anymore! She gasped at the sight of flames rising from the town below. Her neighbors were flying through the streets in a panic, and Briony could see why: the tailor shop and the McGuffs’ house were alight!
Fergus! Briony forgot about Niall and charged down the hill with nary a care for her own well-being. All she could focus on was the thought of the little boy potentially trapped and scared. She reached the burning house and stepped inside. “Hello! Fergus?! Is anyone in here?”
Most of the fire was above her, hungrily swallowing the thatched roof. The smoke was so thick within the confined space that Briony struggled to breathe. Only a few licks of flame had reached the floor, and they were quickly spreading toward the McGuffs’ table.
“H-Here!” came a voice. Whoever it belonged to was too hoarse to identify. Briony covered her mouth with her hand and made her way forward, edging around the blazing table.
Briony hastened into the back bedroom, her eyes flicking between the open window and two beds before landing on their target: Penelope McGuff. The woman was on the ground, facedown. The rest of the family was nowhere in sight.
“Mistress McGuff!” Briony dropped to her knees and grabbed the woman’s hand, but Penelope didn’t stir.
CRASH!
"If you’re still God, Chuck, and I think you are, why don’t you just fix whatever is wrong with the place? If you want me to go back to Eden then something is definitely seriously wrong because you banished me for eternity…remember?"
Chuck made a hard but very truthful confession, "Yeah, it wasn’t my finest moment."
"There’s an understatement," Eve huffed and took another drink.
That got his hackles up, "To be fair, Eve, you did go against me. You did eat that apple."
Eve laughed again, "It was the sweetest most juiciest apple I ever had. That’s not why you cursed me and we both know it. So cut through the bullshit and tell me what’s going on."
The time had come to lay his cards on the table for her to see and so he did even though it was most difficult, "It’s dying, Eve, Eden is dying." Although he knew he shouldn’t, Chuck tried to reach for her hand to show her his sincerity but she pulled it away. "I need you to go back and be its caretaker again."
That seemed impossible almost laughable but the desperation in Chuck’s eyes kept the laughter coming to her lips at bay. "I was never its caretaker that was Lucifer’s job."
Chuck cleared his throat, "Yeah, well, my rebel son is still busy in hell, so I come to you." He raised his eyes hesitantly to meet her gaze, "A Celestial must sit on the Throne of Hell, Eve, I needed Lucifer to fill that spot. I know you hate me for it but I didn’t have another choice."
Darkly she whispered those words again, "That’s not why you did it."
Getting angry again, Chuck muttered, "He taught you that trick, didn’t he? That Soul Stare thing he does."
"It’s not a trick, Chuck, and no I don’t have that power you’re just easier to read than Dr. Seuss."
Chuck began to stand up but Gabriel’s hand closed over his again keeping him in his place. "That won’t get us anywhere, Dad. Face it you got a lot to answer for here, don’t you? So let’s just not smite each other and figure this out."
