“I was thinking…”

She’s on guard immediately.

“Uh-huhhhhhh?”

I give her my best naughty smile.

“Nothing bad,” I assure her. “I figured maybe you and I could just get away for a couple of nights? We could sort out some of the wedding plans…maybe get a jump on the honeymoon…”

Jameson rolls her eyes and smiles at my suggestive suggestion. “Why don’t we just stay here? You, me, the calendar…the three of us can hole up here under the covers,” she counter-offers, wagging her eyebrows up and down in her own…suggestion.

But, adorable as she is, I shake my head.

“Nope.”

“Nope to which part of it? Me? Bed? The calendar?” she asks, sounding slightly amused.

“The ‘here’ part of it,” I explain. “Because you know it won’t just be you and me. It’ll also be Walker. And Bailey. And Bailey’s friend Dana. And Dana’s boyfriend Joseph—”

“All right already! I get the idea!” She’s giggling, even as she kicks me gently with her foot. “Then where did you have in mind?”

“Just leave that up to me.”

“Hmmm…a surprise…I think I quite like that, Scott Clarke.”

“Me, too,” I say, even as I’m leaning down to put my mouth to hers.

“I can’t wait to see what you have in mind,” she whispers between kisses.

Detective Ford’s gaze dropped to her mouth. “I can’t do this again.”

“Do what?” Kayla whispered even though he spoke as though to himself.

A muscle in his clenched jaw ticked, and it took him a few seconds to answer.

“Get involved.”

I’m not her, she thought to argue, but what did he know beyond the truth of her life? A rich young woman over ten years his junior whose daddy spoiled her rotten… Thinking he might turn on his heel and walk out without her even getting a chance to taste his lips twisted Kayla’s stomach.

“I don’t want a house and the picket fence, Detective.” The words spilled from her.

“Jacob,” he murmured, his gaze still on her lips.

“I don’t dream about rainbows and unicorns, Jacob,” Kayla whispered, her mind set on having him, giving her more boldness than usual. “I dream about your skin pressed against mine. Your mouth on my body, giving me what I want.”

He blinked, his gaze jerking up to her eyes, and he lifted his chin just enough, it felt as though he peered down at her. “Tell me what you want, Kayla.”

Alpha and commanding… yes, please. Emboldened, Kayla looked up at him through her lashes.

“I want you to fuck me.”

Jacob worked his jaw and thank fuck, lust rose to shimmer in his eyes.

“I’m not a gentle man.”

“I don’t want gentle.”

“I don’t do the cuddle and pillow talk bullshit after fucking a woman.”

All in, Kayla wasn’t about to hold back.

“Can’t cuddle and pillow talk if you bend me over the table in the back room.”

The man didn’t even flinch. “Conflict of interest, then.”

Kayla huffed a snort and dropped her arms, determined to win her way into the damn man’s slacks. She approached on trembling legs, her heartbeat pounding in her chest. His gray striped tie beckoned to her, and she slid the material between two fingers, trailing downward until she reached the end. Her fingertips rested on his belt buckle, and she lifted her gaze.

“Bullshit excuses,” she whispered.

His breath left in a rush, fanning her face with the scent of wintergreen.

“Kayla…”

“Jacob.” She quirked the corner of her lip.

War raged in his eyes, tensing his body looming over hers. That jaded, he probably hadn’t been intimate with too many women since his ex.

“Can I touch you?” she asked, breathless as hell and soaked through the bit of satin covering her throbbing pussy. Kayla slowly slid her hand downward, and when Jacob didn’t stop her, she found his cock, hard and heavy along his left thigh.

“You want me.”

His lips pursed, and Kayla squeezed his impressive girth, drawing a groan from his chest deep enough his mouth parted.

“Yes.” The whispered confession left his lips, and he grabbed her, yanking her full against his body. It was midnight before the crowds started to thin out. Once couples had performed scenes, they tended to leave shortly afterward. Which was fine by Cora. It made her job easier.

“If you want to do your nightly prep, then I can let you get out of here,” Matt said.

“Really?”

“Yep. You won’t always work until we close at two. We’ve got enough coverage, so get your prep done and then you can cash out and leave,” Matt said with a wink.

“Thanks,” she said. The sooner she got home, the sooner she could get a few hours of sleep. In her world if she scored more than four hours of uninterrupted sleep, it was a damn miracle. Cora printed out receipts for each of the tables with an open tab, including Garrett’s. She stopped by each one and gave them their checks, promising to be back shortly to pick them up.

When she reached table ten, Garrett was still sitting there, watching her. His friend, Jackson, was in one of the scene areas and she blushed at the sight of him thrusting into a tall blonde restrained on the saddlehorse.

“Here you are, Sir. If you want to keep your tab open, just let me know and I will tell Matt. My shift is ending for the night.”

“No, I can close out with you,” Garrett said and tossed a few bills into the black billfold, not even glancing at the total. He’d given her a far too generous tip. “So you’ll be free in a bit?”

“Um, yes, I guess so,” she replied, wondering where he was headed with his question.

“Then why don’t you join me for a drink?” he offered, his blue gaze deepening, making her think of the ocean at sunset with its dark mysterious waves.

“I have prep work I still need to do,” she said in response, ignoring his question, and zoomed away from his table without a backward glance. Her heart hammered in her chest at the blatant invitation.

Cora tried to ignore that her hands were shaking or that she was giving some serious thought to turning around and taking him up on his offer. She took the tray with her prep work—rolling silverware—over to a back table and sighed once she was able to get off her feet.

She ignored the symphony of moans and groans, concentrating on the task at hand. The sooner she finished this, the sooner she could get home. She was in the middle of rolling one set of silverware when someone took the seat across from her. Lifting her gaze, she saw Garrett sitting confidently, the subtle flexing of muscles and sinew of his shoulders and chest making her mouth water.

“What are you doing, Sir?” she sputtered, stunned and slightly aroused by his presence, as Garrett picked up some silverware and began rolling it into a napkin, mimicking her actions.

“Helping, so that you can have a drink with me,” he explained with a dark brow raised, as if it should be obvious what he was doing.

“But I’m not—”

“Cora, it’s a drink, not a marriage proposal,” he chided. His fingers were fast and efficient at rolling the silverware, like he’d done more than his fair share of nightly prep work in restaurants and bars. Which made the man who’d given her a forty-dollar tip all the more interesting.

What can I say about this book? That it's one of my all time favorite romances - one of the first books I poured my heart into. I love this story on so many levels - it is tender, yet passionate. It brings two very different people together - they have nothing in common, and that is a recurring theme in my stories. In "A Polo Passion", the difference is less marked - both protagonists are young, inexperienced in love, and although from different backgrounds, Juan and Rennie are basically the same - and they find each other like magnets. With "Casey Come Home", Casey and Alessandro come from worlds apart. They are older, have had more experience (and heartbreak) in love, and the people around them conspire to keep them apart. They find out who their real friends are, and where their real lives should be. They are not "fortune's fools", as Shakespeare would have it - no, these characters fall in love, but keep their heads and their hearts. Only when it's clear they they cannot possibly live without each other, do they find a way to be together. Alessandro is one of the most endearing hero I ever created - read this story, and let me know what you think!

“I’m not letting you go,” said Alessandro leaning forward. “I won’t.”

Casey looked at him. Her heart seemed to be thumping so hard her chest shook with each beat. “I don’t want you to,” she said. A prickle ran up and down her arms. A breeze could pick her up and carry her away. For the first time since David had died, there was a spark of warmth in her heart. She wanted to laugh aloud, or weep. She wasn’t sure which, but it was a feeling of being alive and she reveled in it.

“Your cheeks are glowing,” he told her.

“It’s because of you,” she said. “I think…” She blushed even harder.

“Yes?” His grin was infectious and Casey found herself grinning too.

“I think I like you, Alessandro Sottini, and I’m glad you decided to give me a second chance for the interview.”

“Oh.” His face fell. “The interview. I forgot all about that.” He looked at her, but his eyes no longer held their spark of fun. “Is that the only reason you came to dinner tonight?”

“I have to admit, it was,” said Casey. She sighed and tilted her head. “I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings. The only reason I came to dinner was to interview you. But I’m finding more reasons to stay,” she told him.

He gave her a brilliant smile. “Really?”

“Do you need to ask?” Casey peered at him. “No, don’t answer that question. I’m sorry. It’s just that you put me off balance. I didn’t expect you to be…well, as you are,” she finished with a shrug.

Alessandro stared at her with his uncanny, amber eyes. His lashes made spiky shadows on his high cheekbones. He didn’t smile. Instead he reached across the table again and took her hand. “When I touch you, I feel something I’ve never felt before,” he said almost to himself. “When I saw you, my heart nearly stopped beating. I’ve never had to beg a woman to go out with me—usually they are throwing themselves at my feet. But I was ready to beg for you.”

In the fifth book in the Time For Alexander series, the Thief of Souls has stolen Alexander's soul, and the druids have foretold the end of their world and have raised an army to kidnap Paul. She said you were really Persephone, the Queen of Ice and Darkness, and that your heart was like a stone.’ ‘She was still upset about Anoramix,’ I said uncertainly. ‘She blamed you for his death and wanted revenge. She forbade me to tell you that Voltarrix is still seeking Paul. She said that Paul would never be safe, and that no one could protect him.’ ‘What does he want with Paul?’ Yovanix spoke as if weighing his words. ‘If it’s true Iskander lost his soul, I think I know why. If Voltarrix captured Paul and put Iskander’s soul in his body, can you imagine what would happen? Paul can no longer call the moon, but he can grow up to lead an army. The Druids are starting to feel the end of their world approaching. They speak of only one thing now; stopping the Romans before it’s too late. Some think it’s already too late. Voltarrix is one of the old ones who believe that time can be twisted.’ ‘Twisted?’ I echoed. My voice sounded odd. ‘The druids believe that time can be changed, like a river’s course. They can change it, slow it, or speed it up. With enough work, they can even make it flow backward. Time is the foundation of the druid’s religion’ It was starting to make sense. Time. The Aztecs had foreseen the date their empire would topple, and they had tried to turn back time with their ceremonies. Nothing had worked for them. Nothing would work for the druids. The Romans would take over and usher in the modern world. Unless a boy, who never should have been born, somehow changed time. It was conceivable – there were still two hundred years. After that, nothing would halt the inexorable march of the Roman Empire and the event that changed the world; the birth of Christ. But suppose the druids somehow managed to unite the Norsemen, Celts, and Gauls against the Romans? What if Paul were somehow the catalyst? Paul – with Iskander’s soul. I took a deep breath. I would have to think about this. There were three people in the world who should never have been born: Paul, Chiron, and Cleopatra – and I was not supposed to be in this time or place. Anyone of us could, conceivably, change the world. A butterfly’s wings indeed.

Alma squinted into the icy wind, bundled against the cold. The mansion stood quiet and dark, same as yesterday.

The satellite dish had been dragged off the stairs and laid on its side against the smooth, white stone building. The stairs where the equipment hit had crumbled, and several large cracks emanated from the impact crater.

Alma let out a gust of breath. If she’d stood there a second longer, she’d be dead. She dashed up the remaining steps, fearful of what else might come from above.

Inside the shelter of the stoop, the house itself radiated cold. Alma raised her red glove, lifting the brass knocker on hollow frozen door.

No answer came.

She pushed the bell.

Somewhere within, a chime tinkled like shattering glass. Still, no sound betrayed that anyone heard her summons.

She took a deep breath to ready herself.

Memories came easier now, easier than they had in years. She had been here before. Once in a Model T. Once before that in a carriage. Once on horseback. Every time, this ice, this cold. Every time, she’d lost him to her. The Ice Queen.

The door would be unlocked, as before. Something about the house, cold and relentless, stood above threat. It had no need for locks. Alma pushed the front door open and stepped inside.
