The Second Time Around
by Ella Quinn

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Can a beautiful Worthington widow find love again? Depends on who’s asking . . .
Before he died, Patience was the Earl of Worthington’s second wife. So why shouldn’t Patience be allowed a second chance at marriage, too? Of course, finding a new husband was not something the mother of four had ever planned on. But a surprise encounter with her first love has suddenly made the impossible seem possible all over again . . .
It seems like a lifetime ago that Richard, Viscount Wolverton, was halfway around the world, looking for adventure . . . while Patience, at her coming-out, was left with no choice but to take old Worthington’s hand. Richard never forgot the woman whose heart he yearned for—and now that he’s back, he’s not going to let her slip away again . . .
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now for an excerpt:

The day after Richard had been told Pae was ill, he was in the reading room at Brook’s having coffee and waiting until he could try to see her again. All he’d been able to think about was her boast that she never took a chill, and now she was sick.

If she was not better today, he would send for some fruit from his succession houses. They would be much better quality than what one could procure in London.

Another gentleman entered the room, drawing a chair up next to his.

“What is my stepmother to you?”

He glanced at Lord Worthington’s stern face and carefully folded the paper, placing it on the low table next to him. “Why do you wish to know?”

“Because she has been asking for you. She’s running a fever.”

Richard stared at the younger man for what seemed like eons before he finally understood. “I’ll come straightaway.”

As he started to rise Worthington’s hand clamped down on Richard’s arm. “I’ll ask you again, what is she to you?”

He looked straight into the other man’s eyes. “The only woman I have ever loved.”

Worthington gave a terse nod. “I was afraid it was something like that.” He released Richard’s arm. “My carriage is outside.”

Tate sighed and gripped the nearly empty bottle. He shifted on the seat enough to look at Raine. “You asked me, so I’ll ask you. Where’s your boyfriend?”
“Don’t have one.” The blush returned. “Single and ready to mingle or whatever it’s called.”
“Oh.” Perfect.
Raine waved his hands. The beer sloshed in his bottle. “Strike that. I mean… Christ, I don’t know what I mean. I don’t have a boyfriend. The last time I tried to date, the guy said I was too nerdy and turned me down.”
He placed his palm on Raine’s thigh. “What if I said I wouldn’t?”
Raine dropped the bottle onto his lap and yelped. “Wait. Wouldn’t turn me down?” He wound his fingers around the neck of the beer and stared at Tate. “You just met me.”
“So?” Tate stood, then put his bottle on the makeshift coffee table. “Sometimes things are meant to happen fast.”
“Fast maybe, but are you sure? I’m…no one. I bet Blake has a guy over there that’s more like what you want.” He scrambled to his feet. “Someone hotter.”
“You’re one of the sexiest men I’ve ever met.” Tate tugged Raine into his arms and stuffed his hands into Raine’s back pockets. He liked the way they fit together. “Dance with me. The music is just loud enough for ambience.”
“Sure.” Raine bowed his head and draped his arms around Tate’s shoulders. “I’m not very good at dancing.”
As they swayed together, Tate held Raine to his chest and breathed in the scent of him. Spicy, but fresh. He rested his chin on Raine’s shoulder and feathered a kiss over Raine’s neck. “You’re doing a great job.”

“Am I?”

This time, his only objective should be locating Charlie’s brother, Sean. But Charlie’s a complication, and not just because she refuses to believe Sean is guilty.

As Frank and Charlie fight for what they believe in, they also try to resist their powerful connection. The future is unclear, but when danger surrounds them, they are each other’s only anchor.

Excerpt © Kacey Hammell, 2017
Charlie closed her eyes and leaned against the door. Tonight had resolved nothing. She’d tried to let Neal down easy, but everything she’d said had gone over his fucking head. Confusion rioted in her skull, throbbing non-stop.
A shift of movement caught her attention, startling her. She opened her eyes and lifted her head, standing tall, on the defense.
Oh, for crying out loud!
All she needed tonight was Frank Shaw in her house, staring at her with anger spitting fire from his eyeballs.
But there he was, eyeing her open collar and cleavage, fists bunched at his sides.

Frustration, sexual and otherwise thanks to him showing up when she least expected, curled around her like molten lava spilling from a volcano.
If he wanted a fight, he’d come to the right place.
“What the hell are you doing sneaking into my house?” she demanded, stomping toward him.
“Calm down. Vikki called, asked me to hang some fucking curtains. She said you were at the bar.”
“Can’t you think up a better excuse than that?”
His eyes roamed over her from head to toe. Damn that spark in his eyes when he gazed at her like that. Anger turned to potent hunger in seconds flat, watching her as if she were the prey and he the hunter … She swallowed hard.
“If I’d known you were home and … busy, I wouldn’t have bothered. Vikki said the back door was open.”
“I’ll talk to her about that.” Charlie sighed, then walked into the kitchen. “Her room is across the hall, last door on the right.”
Undeterred, he followed her. “Hot date, huh?”
“None of your business.” He was the very last person in the world she wanted to discuss Neal with.
He leaned on the island in the center of the room. “I guess Vikki wasn’t even aware you had a date tonight.”
No doubt Vikki didn’t cared anyway. She was Team Charlie and Frank, and Charlie wouldn’t be surprised if her pal had planned the whole thing. Hang curtains, indeed. At this time of night? Without running it past the owner, her roommate? Charlie suspected Vikki was up to no good.
“Doesn’t matter.” Charlie put the last of the wine in the fridge, grabbed a cloth, and cleaned the counters. “You can do it tomorrow when I’m at work. Good-night.” Focused on one spot, she scrubbed hard, hoping he’d take the suggestion.
“You look beautiful.” His soft comment skimmed along her ear as he moved in behind her.
“Frank, don’t. I just had another guy here, for heaven’s sake.”
“Doesn’t matter. It sure didn’t end the way he thought. I know when you’ve been fucked good and satisfied and when you’re not.”

Run to Her
by Lynn Kellan

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She avoids men like him. He needs a woman like her. One lie changes everything...
Gabriel Antonov is a mechanic who can fix anything, even a woman’s hesitance. His talents have earned him the well-deserved reputation as a player, but when a routine one-night stand goes wrong, he’s haunted by what he’s done. Nothing can free him from those depraved memories, until he meets Leigh Nelson.
Leigh avoids strong, silent types like Gabe, who is stronger and quieter than most guys. The only man she’s focused on is her father, who is suffering from a devastating health crisis. She’ll do anything to help him, even at the cost of ignoring her own well-being, but the stress is getting to her. Gabe’s strength is tough to resist, and his silence might be hiding a crushing secret only she can understand.
He can’t outrun his gut-deep craving for her. Problem is, she’s running from him. When they’re marooned in his lakeside cabin, he might finally catch her…if he can admit why he’s falling apart without her.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

How about an excerpt? Here you go:

“I’m here to speak with the owner of this place. A friend of mine set up the meeting.” Leigh glanced at the clock on the wall, which read half past five. “I’m very early. We’re supposed to meet at six.”

“Hold tight and I’ll get him. He’s in the kitchen.” The waitress strolled across the room, opened a door, and poked her head inside. “Your appointment is here.”

The metallic clank of a spoon against the edge of a bowl echoed into the restaurant, followed by a deep bark of laughter. A man walked out, carrying a heaping plate of fries that would clog the arteries of a lesser mortal.

Leigh’s stomach growled, willing to clog a few arteries for those fries…and that man. He was tall, built like an Olympian, and looked like—whoa, hold the phone. He looked like Gabriel Antonov, which couldn’t be possible. Gabe lived in Philadelphia, a few miles away from her apartment. There was no reason he’d be this far north of the city. He owned a busy auto repair shop that devoured most of his time. An Internet search for ‘brawny workaholics’ would put his name near the top of the results page.

When she’d seen him a few mornings ago, he hadn’t mentioned that he might head into the mountains for the weekend—but he never chatted about his plans.

He didn’t chat about anything.

She took advantage of her semi-hidden position by the cash register to gobble him up with her gaze. Faded blue jeans clung to his long legs like water, rippling with every flex of his muscular thighs. A gray T-shirt hugged a burly torso that could have graced the home page of a fitness website. Thick black whiskers darkened his sturdy jaw, which made him look ferocious in a hold-on-to-your-ovaries kind of way.

His dark eyes landed on her and he slowed to a stop. “Hey, Leigh.”

“Hi.” She gave him a puzzled grin. “What are you doing here?”

One side of his mouth tilted up. “Waiting for you.”

“But I’m supposed to meet the owner of this place.”

“You just did.”

Of course. She ran into Gabe everywhere, so why not here? He smelled like crispy fries and pine forests, two of her new favorite things. If she could fuse those scents into a cologne, she’d call it Spud Stud and sell the fragrance at Christmas. She’d make millions. “I didn’t expect to see you, tonight.”

“I didn’t tell you I’d be here, for good reason.” His deep voice bottomed out to a low murmur. “If you knew I owned this place, you might not show up.”

His square-jawed, Slavic features made him look like he was made of concrete and steel. Immovable. Not going away, even though Leigh had turned him down every time he’d asked for a date. Part of her wanted to hug him for not giving up. The other part wanted to sprint out the door, because she knew he carried a heavy secret. She had one, too. The weight of that burden had driven her into a psychologist’s office two months ago, where she’d bumped into Gabe. Literally. She’d collided face-first into his hard, broad chest. He’d taken one look at her, turned as gray as dishwater, and left.

She’d never mentioned the encounter and neither did he, but she wondered why she kept running into this man. Like now. “There must be a mistake. I’m here to pick up a book. My friend told me to come here.”

“You must be talking about Darlene, right? I saw her a few days ago when she dropped off her car for an oil change. She said you’re looking for a vintage copy of The Twisted Claw. I’ve got one. You can have the book if you’re willing to make a trade.”

“Oh.” Darlene hadn’t mentioned a trade. She hadn’t revealed that Gabe would be here, either. Typical. Darlene loved surprises, especially if they unnerved people. Leigh clasped her hands behind her back and frowned. Usually, she bought the vintage books for a few bucks. She’d never bartered for one. “What do you want in exchange for the book?”

“Dinner with you.” He plucked a menu off the counter.

Eye Candy
by Pauline Allan

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gavin Rossi is one sexy piece of Eye Candy wrapped in a tight body and sweet smile. The hot
breath on his neck, the mesmerizing rhythm as he rolls his hips, the strong chest rising and falling beneath his hands make for a distraction he’s terrified to see play out.
When Dutch Williamson feels a set of perfectly sculpted thighs slipping over his lap, the last thing his liquor-hazed brain registers is this is my future. The tempting piece of Eye Candy grinding on his lap is going to cut him at the knees, and he knows it.
This is a dance. This is a tease. God, this is so much more.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

And now for an Excerpt:

 Gavin stood by the marble-top island. “We need to discuss rent.” He stuffed his hands in the pockets of his faded jeans. “Between the two jobs, I can pay you something. I don’t expect a handout. I need to do my part.”

Everything had turned upside down. Being alone and content no longer counted for anything good in his life. Once again, the privileges of his birth were humbling. He shut the door. The guy had pride. Fighting the urge to pull those sexy hips into his hands, he passed the island and looked over his shoulder. “You coming? You can pick which room you want and…we’ll discuss the logistics in the morning when you come to the restaurant for your interview.”

He stopped, giving Gavin time to catch up at the staircase.

“You were serious, weren’t you? I um, I really didn’t expect you to offer me a job. I figured I could get a good night’s sleep, you’d wake up and regret asking me to be a tenant, and I’d have to take off, but now it feels different.”

Dutch stopped when they reached the top of the stairs. “I told you, you’re safe with me. If you stay around, you’ll see I’m telling the truth. Every bedroom has a lock. Use it if you feel you need to, but know it’s your space, and I’ll respect that.”

Gavin took the bag to sling it over his shoulder. “What if I don’t want to lock the door?”

Well hell. “Then I’ll need to lock mine.”

Guest Post ~ Hank's Justice by AM Griffin

Hank’s Justice
Contemporary Romance

Want to win something cool? There's a $10 Amazon GC up for grabs!! Check it out and fill out the Rafflecopter at the end of the post! Grab your copy today!

Hank's Justice by AM Griffin

Justice needs to start afresh someplace her abusive ex can’t find or hurt her and her son anymore. Just her luck to be stranded in Scenic Falls, Montana where, instead of being faceless people in the big city, they stick out like sore thumbs. Being so conspicuous and drawing everyone’s attention, especially that of hot cattle rancher, Hank, means they can’t stay. No matter how much it feels like home.
Hank was born, raised, and plans to die in Scenic Falls. What he doesn’t need is to obsess over the city woman who’s come to town and no doubt would soon move on. Then Justice becomes his live-in cook and bookkeeper and, despite knowing she has secrets she won’t share, Hank realizes he’ll do anything to make her stay in the small town, and with him. That is, until Justice’s past comes calling, threatening everything.

Now for an excerpt:

“This life isn’t for everyone. The hours are long and sometimes feel never-ending.” She handed a plastic spatula to TJ and they began scooping chocolate frosting from a large bowl to coat the cake. “You’ll be paid salary because hourly just isn’t possible. You’ll be expected to have breakfast cooked by five-thirty every morning except Sundays. The field hands might not come for breakfast but be sure to expect them for lunch. That’ll be two extra mouths to feed. There’s also dinner to be made and, in-between the meals, the house needs to be kept up, laundry done and, of course, balancing the books and making sure all the bills are paid and invoices sent out.”
What the hell am I getting myself into?
“I know it sounds like a lot,” Ruth continued. “But it’s not anything more than what the average mother does on a daily basis. Room and board are free. No bills to pay here. You’ll get a cell phone and a salary. As long as the food is cooked, chores done and books are balanced your time is yours to do with as you please.” Ruth pulled her lips to the side and looked up at the ceiling as if trying to remember something else. Then, seeming to give up, she said, “I guess that’s all. Are you ready for a tour of the house?”
“Um, sure.”
Ruth showed them the main floor, which consisted of a living room, formal dining room, bathroom, office, laundry room and master bedroom. In the bedroom, clothes were thrown about. Dresser drawers hung open with items spilling from them. A large unmade bed occupied one side and a door leading to a private bathroom was on the other.
“This is my son’s room. I want to say that you wouldn’t have to come in here and clean but, as you can see, he could use the help.”
The cat that she’d seen earlier was now sprawled out on the bed, stretched across one of the pillows.
Justice imagined a teenage boy who would rather play video games than clean his room. “I’ll get on him about it,” she promised.
Ruth smiled at that. “Just what I wanted to hear. When his mother tells him to clean his room it falls on deaf ears. But if a pretty woman like you says something…well, I think he’ll be more apt to pay attention.”
“What’s the cat’s name?” TJ asked.
“Sugar Bear.”
At hearing his name the cat got up and walked over to them, going straight to TJ begging to be picked up. TJ obliged.
Ruth led them up some back stairs to the second story, where there were three additional rooms. One was a master bedroom with a walk-in closet and a private bathroom. It was so large that it had views from three sides of the house. The other two rooms were about the same size as each other and both opened to a shared bathroom.
“You can take the master bedroom since Hank likes his room on the main floor.”
Hank. Where had she remembered that name from?
She followed Ruth as she led them down the front stairs and back to the kitchen. “When will I know if I have the job?” Justice asked as the name tugged at the back of her mind.
“Right now. I hope you’ll take it.”
Justice beamed. “Yes. Yes, I’ll take it.” She gathered Ruth’s hand in hers and shook it like a fool. “I won’t let you down. I promise.”
“Oh, honey you aren’t coming to work for me. You’ll be working for my son.”
The smile Justice wore turned into confusion. She dropped Ruth’s hand. “I-I don’t understand.”
The front door opened and heavy boots thumped against the wood floors. As if in slow motion the man who had caught her eyes appeared at the kitchen door. “Ma, did I miss…” his eyes settled on her, “the interview?”

How Do You Know?
by Meredith Schorr

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On the eve of her thirty-ninth birthday, Maggie Piper doesn’t look, act, or feel much different than she
did at twenty-nine, but with her fortieth birthday speeding toward her like a freight train, she wonders if she should. The fear of a slowing metabolism, wrinkling of her skin, and the ticking of her biological clock leaves Maggie torn between a desire to settle down like most of her similarly-aged peers and concern that all is not perfect in her existing relationship. When a spontaneous request for a temporary break from her live-in boyfriend results in a breakup, Maggie finds herself single once again and only twelve months from the big 4.0.
As Maggie reenters the New York City dating jungle, suitors present themselves quickly, but who is “The One?” Is he a sexy coworker, one of many bachelors at a speed-dating event, or is he the man she already set free? How do you know? Her fun-loving friends and supportive family, including meddlesome “no-filter” Aunt Helen, eagerly share their (often unsolicited) opinions, but Maggie is determined to find her own way, even if she falls on her face—repeatedly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now for an Excerpt:

“What kind of accolades do you think I receive from my esteemed colleagues?”

I scratch my chin, pretending to ponder the question. “I would imagine people have commented positively on your skills as an attorney.”

Dismissing me with a wave of his hand, Philip says, “Good attorneys are a dime a dozen in this place. Or at least I hope so.”

“Okay. What about that you’re approachable and friendly?”

Philip gives me a closed-mouth smile and nods. “I suppose I’ve heard that before, but it’s not exactly a blush-worthy compliment now, is it?”

I cock my head to the side. “I wasn’t aware you were hoping for a compliment which would make you blush.” As Philip remains riveted in place, seemingly eager for my next words, it dawns on me this is my chance to “work it.”

Philip rubs the back of his neck. “Oh, now I’m fishing. I’m being silly. Let’s forget I brought it—”

Interrupting him, I say, “How about you have the most beautiful brown eyes I’ve ever seen on a man?”

In the mere seconds it takes him to respond, I feel like I’ve aged several years, and as I wonder whether what I’d said could be construed as sexual harassment in the work place, I think I might throw up.

His hand still stroking his neck, he mumbles, “Well, Maggie Piper, I’ll be damned. You did it.”

“Did what?” I ask in a low voice. Got myself fired?
